Cy Endfield 1972 Folding Travel Chess Set, IC Design — It is the rare travel set that is also an heirloom: small enough for a jacket pocket when folded, beautiful enough to leave open on a desk.

An authorized IC Design edition of a 1972 design.

The Design Story

Filmmaker, magician and silversmith-in-training, Cyril Endfield came to chess through Man Ray. In 1972 his patented pocket set became the official souvenir of the most famous match ever played, Fischer against Spassky, picked by FIDE’s Max Euwe. IC Design’s edition marks the match’s 50th anniversary; a Swiss social workshop, tät-tat, builds the steel board.

Why You’ll Love It

It is the rare travel set that is also an heirloom: small enough for a jacket pocket when folded, beautiful enough to leave open on a desk. The silver and gold pieces are tiny, precise sculptures. And it carries a real piece of chess history.

Made for Real Life

Looking after it is simple: a soft cloth now and then, no water, and a spot out of strong sunlight. Pair it with Man Ray Chess Pieces and Board Set, Man Ray 17-Inch Wooden Chess Board, Man Ray Beech Wood Chess Pieces.
