Man Ray Chess Pieces and Board Set, IC Design — It is a chess set that works as a sculpture when nobody is playing.
An authorized IC Design edition of a 1920s design.
The Design Story
Man Ray turned to chess throughout his career, and his friendship with Marcel Duchamp kept him close to the game. IC Design’s edition pairs his pieces with a board built for them. The set goes back to an original that now belongs to the Met in New York; Man Ray reduced each piece to a basic solid, and the knight borrows its curl from a violin head.
Why You’ll Love It
It is a chess set that works as a sculpture when nobody is playing. The pieces read as a small family of geometric forms rather than carved figures, and the board gives them a crisp black-and-natural stage. Buying both together means the colors and scale match exactly.
Made for Real Life
Pair it with Man Ray 17-Inch Wooden Chess Board, Man Ray Beech Wood Chess Pieces, Cy Endfield 1972 Folding Travel Chess Set.
