Peter Bristol: Helium, Cloak and Lights That Seem to Float

Black and white portrait of designer Peter Bristol

Peter Bristol designs for the Modern Collection by Visual Comfort & Co. Each of his series starts from one simple idea and follows it all the way: light that floats, metal that folds like cloth, a source you never see.

Helium: lighter than air

Bristol designed Helium to feel weightless. Clusters of etched opal glass globes hang on fine black cables, as light as balloons, in pendants, chandeliers and multi-light arrays that can fill a stairwell or float over a dining table.

“Peter Bristol designed Helium to feel weightless.”

Cloak: metal that drapes

For Cloak he looked at the way cloth drapes and folds, then reduced it to line, surface and light. A sheet of metal folds around a hidden band of warm light, so there is no glare and no visible source.

Trace, Cymbal and Shielded

Trace strips lighting back to essential forms, where gravity and assembly define the structure. Cymbal hides its LED inside a thin armature aimed into the shade. And Shielded hides its light completely behind a brass shade on a slender frame, so it glows as if by magic.
