Design Classics: Man Ray & Riki Watanabe Re-editions

Some designs deserve a second life. This edit brings together two: the Kuen surface, a curve of constant negative curvature that Man Ray found among the plaster models of a Paris institute and turned into photographs and paintings, now cast in sterling silver to wear; and the Chambre mobile, Riki Watanabe’s three copper discs on teak arms, made for a Tokyo hotel bar and returned to production by Metrocs in 2017.

The Pieces

The People Behind It

Man Ray — Photographer, painter and object-maker at the center of Dada and Surrealism; his Shakespearean Equations paintings came from mathematical models.

Riki Watanabe — Tokyo-born pioneer of Japanese modernism, famous for his 1952 Himo string chair and his love of copper.

Good to Know

What makes these pieces design classics?

Each comes from a designer who shaped the 20th century, Man Ray in art and Riki Watanabe in Japanese design, re-editioned faithfully.

Can I wear the Kuen pieces as a set?

Yes: the earrings, pendant and cufflinks all share the same Kuen form in sterling silver.

Does the Chambre mobile really turn?

Yes, its three copper-and-teak elements move gently in the air of the room.

Where does the Chambre mobile hang best? (our styling advice)

Over a dining table, in a stairwell or near a window, above head height.

How quickly do these ship?

In-stock pieces typically leave within 2–3 business days; ground shipping is free in the 48 contiguous states on orders over $100.
