PILAR Bowls by Nina Thöming for blomus — Straight-sided stoneware bowls in sets of four, from a small snack bowl to a 17.5 oz medium bowl.
Part of PILAR, Nina Thöming’s matte-and-glazed stoneware tableware for the German design house blomus.
The Design Story

Thöming built the bowls on the same diameter logic as the plates, so they sit inside one another and on top of the plates like sections of a column. Thöming, born in 1984, trained as an industrial designer and works at Flöz Design in Germany, a studio blomus has relied on for many years. Her method is to study the need before drawing the answer, and PILAR is one of her best-known results, alongside the SONO bath collection.
PILAR plays one idea across the whole table: a velvety matte shell with a glossy glazed lining. The body is stoneware, cast from clay, quartz and minerals and fired hot, so it has more heft than porcelain and none of its translucency. The name is Spanish for pillar or column, a nod to shapes that stack straight and true. Colors run from Moonbeam (soft beige) and Mirage Grey (light gray with a hint of green) to Agave Green (dark and muted) and Pewter (charcoal).
Why You’ll Love It
Straight walls mean more room than a tapered bowl of the same width, and they make stacking easy. The medium bowl is the daily cereal and soup bowl; the shallow one flatters a salad or dessert. The small sizes corral sauces, olives and nuts on a shared table.
Made for Real Life
Dishwasher and microwave safe, according to blomus. Firing and glazing leave small differences from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Pairs well with the plates, salad bowls, pasta plates.

Where It Shines
It looks at home on a breakfast table with granola, at a rice-bowl dinner, holding olives at an apéritif, or stacked by color on a kitchen shelf.
Questions We Hear Most
What is the difference between the shallow and medium PILAR bowls?
They are the same 5.5" width. The shallow bowl is 1.7" high and holds 13 oz; the medium is 2.2" high and holds 17.5 oz.
What are the two smallest PILAR bowls for?
The narrow snack bowl holds nuts, olives or a dip; the flat XS bowl is for soy sauce, oil or a pat of butter.
Do PILAR bowls nest?
Same-size bowls stack, and the smaller sizes sit inside the larger ones.
What makes the PILAR bowls matte outside and glossy inside?
The glaze goes where food and drink touch, so it cleans easily; the outside is left matte for a soft, velvety look and feel.
Which interiors suit the PILAR bowls?
Minimalist, Scandinavian and Japandi kitchens, and any room where muted, earthy color leads.
When will my PILAR bowls leave the warehouse?
In-stock orders usually leave within 2–3 business days.

Why We Love It
Matte outside, glossy inside, and built to stack: PILAR is tableware reduced to what matters. From a small town in Germany’s old steel region, the Blome family has gone from bicycle parts (1921) to metal gifts (1961) to the design label blomus (2000), still family-run in its fourth generation. LoftModern is an authorized blomus retailer.
