PILAR Plates by Nina Thöming for blomus — Matte stoneware plates with a glossy glazed face, sold in sets of four, in three sizes and four muted colors.
Part of PILAR, Nina Thöming’s matte-and-glazed stoneware tableware for the German design house blomus.
The Design Story

Thöming drew the PILAR plate as a shallow cylinder instead of a curved dish. That short, straight rim is the detail that lets the whole family stack like a column, which is what the Spanish name means. Thöming, born in 1984, trained as an industrial designer and works at Flöz Design in Germany, a studio blomus has relied on for many years. Her method is to study the need before drawing the answer, and PILAR is one of her best-known results, alongside the SONO bath collection.
PILAR plays one idea across the whole table: a velvety matte shell with a glossy glazed lining. The body is stoneware, cast from clay, quartz and minerals and fired hot, so it has more heft than porcelain and none of its translucency. The name is Spanish for pillar or column, a nod to shapes that stack straight and true. Colors run from Moonbeam (soft beige) and Mirage Grey (light gray with a hint of green) to Agave Green (dark and muted) and Pewter (charcoal).
Why You’ll Love It
The matte rim frames food like a picture mount, while the glazed center wipes clean. Three sizes layer into a full place setting. The four colors mix freely, so a Pewter dinner plate under a Moonbeam dessert plate looks planned. On open shelving, the stacks stay low and tidy.
Made for Real Life
Dishwasher and microwave safe, according to blomus. Firing and glazing leave small differences from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Pairs well with the bowls, pasta plates, mugs.

Where It Shines
It looks at home on a linen-covered dinner table, layered for a holiday meal, stacked on open kitchen shelves, or under a slice of cake at coffee time.
Questions We Hear Most
How do I build a PILAR place setting?
Layer a dessert plate on a dinner plate, add a medium or shallow bowl, and finish with a mug or a cup and saucer in the same or a contrasting color.
Which PILAR plate color is the most versatile?
Moonbeam, a soft beige, sits quietly with any food and any table. Pewter gives the strongest contrast.
Is the snack-size PILAR plate useful on its own?
Yes. At 5.5" it works as a bread plate, a saucer under a mug or a dish for small bites.
What makes the PILAR plates matte outside and glossy inside?
The glaze goes where food and drink touch, so it cleans easily; the outside is left matte for a soft, velvety look and feel.
Which interiors suit the PILAR plates?
Minimalist, Scandinavian and Japandi kitchens, and any room where muted, earthy color leads.
When will my PILAR plates leave the warehouse?
In-stock orders usually leave within 2–3 business days.

Why We Love It
Matte outside, glossy inside, and built to stack: PILAR is tableware reduced to what matters. From a small town in Germany’s old steel region, the Blome family has gone from bicycle parts (1921) to metal gifts (1961) to the design label blomus (2000), still family-run in its fourth generation. LoftModern is an authorized blomus retailer.
