MAKOTO Pedestal Plates by Carsten Gollnick for blomus — Matte stoneware plates on a low pedestal that makes them look as if they float, in three sizes and two glazes.
Part of MAKOTO, Carsten Gollnick’s Japanese-inspired stoneware for the German design house blomus, made in Portugal.
The Design Story

Gollnick wanted plates that present food the way Japanese tableware does: clear geometry, nothing extra, and a low hidden foot that lifts each plate off the table so it seems to hover. He then gave MAKOTO two very different glazes. Gollnick, born in 1966, has run his own studio in Germany since 1997 and has drawn on Japanese design for his whole career. He works by a simple rule taken from that tradition: no object outranks another, since even the smallest piece has a purpose. More than 100 products and awards from iF, the German Design Award and Red Dot have come out of that studio.
Why You’ll Love It
The pedestal does a lot of quiet work: it casts a soft shadow line under the rim, so even a simple meal looks plated. The matte glazes feel good under the fork and look warm in candlelight. Three sizes cover a whole meal, and because each piece is fired individually, no two plates are quite the same. They go into the dishwasher and the microwave like everyday plates.
Made for Real Life
Dishwasher and microwave safe, according to blomus. Our advice: stack with a soft liner between plates if you keep them in a busy cupboard, to protect the matte glaze. Each piece is unique: small variations appear during firing and give every piece its character. Pairs well with the floating bowls, floating teacups, sushi platter.

Where It Shines
It looks at home on a long dinner-party table, at a Sunday brunch, in a small restaurant or under a single dessert.
Questions We Hear Most
How do I build a full MAKOTO place setting?
A dinner plate, a dessert or side plate and a bowl make the base; add a handleless cup, and a tray or platter for sharing. Mixing Moonbeam with Elephant Skin works well too.
Why do MAKOTO plates seem to float?
A small recessed foot lifts each plate just off the table and hides in its shadow, so the rim appears to hover. That’s the signature of the MAKOTO collection.
Is the MAKOTO Moonbeam glaze rough to the touch?
It has a visible, moon-like texture with a matte feel; Elephant Skin is the smoother choice. Both are dishwasher safe.
Can MAKOTO plates handle everyday family meals?
Yes. They’re stoneware, dishwasher and microwave safe, so they’re made for daily use, not just for best.
What style of home do MAKOTO plates suit?
Japandi, Scandinavian, minimalist and warm modern interiors, and any table where you want food to be the focus.
When will my MAKOTO plates ship?
They usually leave within 2–3 business days of your order.

Why We Love It
Every piece is a little different from the kiln, and the floating base turns an everyday table into a composition. From a small town in Germany’s old steel region, the Blome family has gone from bicycle parts (1921) to metal gifts (1961) to the design label blomus (2000), still family-run in its fourth generation. LoftModern is an authorized blomus retailer.
