MAKOTO Floating Bowls by Carsten Gollnick for blomus — Matte stoneware bowls on a subtle pedestal for cereal, soup, rice or dips, in two glazes.
Part of MAKOTO, Carsten Gollnick’s Japanese-inspired stoneware for the German design house blomus, made in Portugal.
The Design Story

The bowl is where MAKOTO’s Japanese roots show most: a straight-sided form on a small foot, like a rice bowl, drawn with Gollnick’s clean geometry. The foot lifts the bowl just enough to catch a shadow underneath. Gollnick, born in 1966, has run his own studio in Germany since 1997 and has drawn on Japanese design for his whole career. He works by a simple rule taken from that tradition: no object outranks another, since even the smallest piece has a purpose. More than 100 products and awards from iF, the German Design Award and Red Dot have come out of that studio.
Why You’ll Love It
It is comfortable to hold in one hand, the way a rice bowl should be. The straight walls make a medium bowl generous for its footprint, and the XS bowl is the little piece you end up using every day for soy sauce, olives or nuts. The matte glaze looks good empty on a shelf, too. Every bowl is slightly different from firing.
Made for Real Life
Dishwasher and microwave safe, according to blomus. Our advice: avoid sudden temperature shocks, such as moving a bowl from the fridge straight into a hot oven. Each piece is unique: small variations appear during firing and give every piece its character. Pairs well with the pedestal plates, footed serving bowls, tray saucer.

Questions We Hear Most
Which MAKOTO bowl should I start with?
Most people start with the medium bowl for everyday meals and add XS bowls for sauces and snacks. Both sit naturally with the MAKOTO plates.
Do MAKOTO bowls stack well?
Yes, same-size bowls nest on their pedestals, and blomus photographs them stacked on open shelves.
Is the MAKOTO bowl Japanese style?
It’s inspired by Japanese tableware, with a straight-sided form on a small foot, designed by Carsten Gollnick for the German brand blomus and made in Portugal.
Will the MAKOTO bowl glaze look the same in every bowl?
Close, but not identical: firing leaves small variations, so each bowl is unique.
What does the Elephant Skin MAKOTO bowl look like?
A smooth, matte warm gray. Moonbeam is lighter with a textured, moon-surface look.
When will my MAKOTO bowls ship?
They usually leave within 2–3 business days of your order.

Why We Love It
Every piece is a little different from the kiln, and the floating base turns an everyday table into a composition. From a small town in Germany’s old steel region, the Blome family has gone from bicycle parts (1921) to metal gifts (1961) to the design label blomus (2000), still family-run in its fourth generation. LoftModern is an authorized blomus retailer.
