KUMI Plates, Japanese Style, by blomus — Reactive-glazed stoneware plates in five sizes, from a 3.9-inch dish to a 10.2-inch dinner plate, sold singly.
Part of KUMI, the Japanese-inspired, reactive-glazed stoneware collection from the German design house blomus.
The Design Story
The KUMI plate takes its cue from Japanese tableware: a shallow dish with a raised edge, sized in small steps so several can share a table. KUMI is a studio blomus design, created by the brand’s own team in Sundern.
KUMI is blomus looking east. The forms are Japanese in origin and the surface comes from reactive glazing, a process that never repeats itself: the glaze reacts to oxygen in the kiln and settles into its own pattern of flecks and shading on every piece. According to blomus, the name is a Japanese word for eternal beauty. Two natural colors, dark-brown Espresso and mushroom-toned Fungi, are made to sit side by side.
Why You’ll Love It
Because each plate is sold on its own, you can build a set your way: six dinner plates and two tiny ones for condiments, for instance. The raised rim holds sauces. The mottled glaze makes even a simple meal look considered, and it gains character with use.
Made for Real Life
Dishwasher and microwave safe, according to blomus. Dots, flecks and uneven tones come from the reactive glaze and differ on every piece; blomus notes that KUMI gains character with use over time. Pairs well with the bowls, centerpiece platter, tea cup.

Where It Shines
It looks at home at a sushi night, layered at a dinner party, on open shelves in a mix of both colors, or under a single pastry.
Questions We Hear Most
How do I mix Espresso and Fungi KUMI plates?
Alternate them by size, for example a Fungi dessert plate on an Espresso dinner plate; the contrast is the point.
What does the KUMI glaze look like up close?
It has a soft sheen with visible flecks and tonal shifts left by the reactive glaze.
Are KUMI plates good for sushi?
Yes, the small and side sizes suit sushi, with the X-Small plate for ginger or wasabi.
Why can the KUMI plates show specks or uneven color?
That is the reactive glaze at work. It reacts to oxygen in the kiln, so each piece comes out with its own markings.
What style of home suits the KUMI plates?
Japandi, wabi-sabi, rustic modern and minimalist interiors, and any table built around natural, earthy tones.
When will my KUMI plates leave the warehouse?
In-stock orders usually leave within 2–3 business days.

Why We Love It
No two pieces match exactly, and that is the point: KUMI brings wabi-sabi calm to an everyday table. From a small town in Germany’s old steel region, the Blome family has gone from bicycle parts (1921) to metal gifts (1961) to the design label blomus (2000), still family-run in its fourth generation. LoftModern is an authorized blomus retailer.
