Tsume Hand-Forged Grip Scissors by Kenshi Terasaki — snips forged in the fire, one pair at a time, by a smith who trained late and works by feel.
Made by Kenshi Terasaki at Terazaki Hamono, Hyogo.
The Design Story
Most Japanese grip scissors start life as factory-made composite steel. Kenshi Terasaki’s don’t: he joins iron and steel himself in the fire, at around 1,000 °C, and shapes each pair with a hammer, a difficult, wasteful method few smiths still attempt. Terasaki trained late: he left Kumamoto at 36 to learn from a master in Hyogo, then set up a workshop of his own nearby. He works by feel, to a tenth of a millimetre, and has no interest in mass production.
Why You’ll Love It
Squeeze them once and you understand why makers covet hand-forged nigiri scissors. The spring answers your fingers precisely, the short claw blade meets at the tip with a crisp snick, and the whole tool sits in the hand like it was made for it, because a person shaped it to a tenth of a millimetre. They are a small object with an extraordinary amount of craft inside.
Made for Real Life
Keep them by the sewing machine or embroidery hoop for thread, or in a craft kit. Wipe and dry them after use and give them an occasional drop of oil.

Questions We Hear Most
How do grip scissors work?
There are no finger loops: you press the blades together in your palm and a steel spring opens them.
What is sohizukuri?
Total fire construction: the smith forge-welds iron and steel at around 1,000 °C and shapes everything by hammer, without a mold.
Why the short “claw” blade?
The tsume shape is compact and very easy to control for quick, precise snips.
Who uses Kenshi Terasaki’s scissors?
Sewers, embroiderers, craftspeople and makers of Japanese sweets, among others.
Are these scissors a good gift for a maker? (our advice)
Yes, a rare, hand-forged tool they will use for life.
How do I keep hand-forged scissors in good condition?
Wipe and dry them, oil them occasionally and store them away from moisture.
