PILAR Butter Box by Nina Thöming for blomus — A rectangular stoneware butter dish with a lid, which also serves snacks, olives and spreads.
Part of PILAR, Nina Thöming’s matte-and-glazed stoneware tableware for the German design house blomus.
The Design Story

Thöming took PILAR’s one right-angled moment and made a box of it: a rectangle with softened corners and a lid that sits flush. Thöming, born in 1984, trained as an industrial designer and works at Flöz Design in Germany, a studio blomus has relied on for many years. Her method is to study the need before drawing the answer, and PILAR is one of her best-known results, alongside the SONO bath collection.
PILAR plays one idea across the whole table: a velvety matte shell with a glossy glazed lining. The body is stoneware, cast from clay, quartz and minerals and fired hot, so it has more heft than porcelain and none of its translucency. The name is Spanish for pillar or column, a nod to shapes that stack straight and true. Colors run from Moonbeam (soft beige) and Mirage Grey (light gray with a hint of green) to Agave Green (dark and muted) and Pewter (charcoal).
Why You’ll Love It
Butter stays covered and spreadable on the counter. The plain box looks deliberate on the table, not like something borrowed from the fridge. Without its lid it is a handy dish for condiments.
Made for Real Life
Dishwasher and microwave safe, according to blomus. Firing and glazing leave small differences from piece to piece, so no two are exactly alike. Pairs well with the plates, salt & pepper trio, pantry jars.

It looks at home on a breakfast table next to the bread, on a charcuterie board with olives, on the counter by the toaster, or holding sea salt by the stove.
Questions We Hear Most
Can I leave the PILAR butter box on the counter?
Yes. The lid keeps butter covered, and the plain box looks good left out.
What else fits in the PILAR butter box?
Olives, spreads, cream cheese, relishes, sugar cubes or flaky salt.
Is the PILAR butter box a good housewarming gift?
Yes, it is useful every day and matches any kitchen.
What makes the PILAR butter box matte outside and glossy inside?
The glaze goes where food and drink touch, so it cleans easily; the outside is left matte for a soft, velvety look and feel.
Which interiors suit the PILAR butter box?
Minimalist, Scandinavian and Japandi kitchens, and any room where muted, earthy color leads.
When will my PILAR butter box leave the warehouse?
In-stock orders usually leave within 2–3 business days.

Why We Love It
Matte outside, glossy inside, and built to stack: PILAR is tableware reduced to what matters. From a small town in Germany’s old steel region, the Blome family has gone from bicycle parts (1921) to metal gifts (1961) to the design label blomus (2000), still family-run in its fourth generation. LoftModern is an authorized blomus retailer.
