Paper-Wrapped Calligraphy Brush D by Umpei Fude — black horse and deer hair, wrapped in washi by Kyoto’s oldest brush makers.
Made by hand at Hankeido for Umpei Fude.
The Design Story
Some Japanese crafts are old; Hankeido’s is older than most nations’ flags. The Fujino family opened the Kyoto workshop in 1615 and has handed its brush-making down, generation by generation, ever since. Its signature is the paper-wrapped brush, in which layers of hair are wrapped in washi, a technique so rare that only a handful of workshops still practice it.
Why You’ll Love It
Brush D is the bold one in the set. Its firm black horse and deer hair, rolled in washi, gives a strong stroke with a crisp finish, ideal for the measured strokes of kaisho and the flowing turns of gyosho. Pick it up and you feel the weight of four centuries of practice behind it.
Made for Real Life
Rinse it under running water after each session, press out the water, shape the point and hang or lay it to dry. Keep the wood away from water.
