The Design Story

ATOM Corporation in Takehara, Hiroshima, makes work gloves and rubber boots for farmers and builders, including the thin, flexible boots worn for planting rice. Pokeboo takes that idea out of the paddy and into the city: natural rubber thin enough to roll up, a flat sole you can feel the ground through, and a carry bag with a carabiner. Japan’s Good Design Award jury chose it in 2018 for how thin and compact it folds.

Pokeboo boots solve the “will it rain?” question: carry them like an umbrella, pull them on when you need them. They are thin and supple, so they move with you, and the flat sole feels surprisingly natural.

Made for Real Life

Roll them up after use, let them dry, and stuff newspaper inside when stored. For a grippier sole, see Rugged-Tread Packable Rain Boots by Pokeboo. Cool water and a cloth for the rubber; the lining comes out for a hand wash and dries on a line. Keep them away from dryers, sunlight and anything petroleum-based. A white “bloom” on natural rubber is normal and washes off with mild soap.
