TYP 113 Bauhaus Clamp Lamp by Curt Fischer for Midgard — the 1920s Bauhaus task lamp, hand-built again in Germany in a numbered run of 100.
Made in Germany by Midgard, the company that invented adjustable light.
The Design Story
Light that moves with you: that was Curt Fischer’s idea when he patented the first adjustable electric lamp in 1919 and named his company Midgard. Within a few years Gropius had specified his lamps for the new Bauhaus in Dessau, and Breuer, Albers and Moholy-Nagy worked under them. A century on, the same family of lamps is built in Germany on the original tooling.
Why You’ll Love It
Most “Bauhaus-style” lamps borrow the look. This is the lamp: the TYP 113 that Gropius put into the Dessau workshops, made again by hand on the original tooling. The stem is bent by Thonet, the switch is a real Bakelite part from the old factory, and the number on it says it is one of only a hundred.
Made for Real Life
Clamp it to a desk, swing the arm, turn the shade and it holds where you leave it. For a floor-standing companion, see Spring Balanced Articulated Floor Lamp by Midgard. Lamp off and cool, then a dry microfibre cloth. A barely damp cloth with mild soap lifts marks on enamel or powder coat; skip scouring pads and solvents, and keep water away from the electrics.

Questions We Hear Most
Was the TYP 113 really used at the Bauhaus?
Yes. When the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1926, Midgard lamps selected by Walter Gropius were installed, and the TYP 113 was used throughout the workshops and studios.
Who bends the TYP 113’s arm?
Thonet, the bentwood furniture maker, hand forms the nickel-plated steel stem.
Are the TYP 113’s switch and lamp holder new parts?
They are new old stock: early-20th-century Bakelite switches and ceramic holders found in the original factory.
Can the TYP 113 shade turn?
Yes. The bias-cut shade rotates and the arm articulates, so the beam goes exactly where you work.
What does the TYP 113 measure in centimetres?
About 25 × 20 × 80 cm, 2.3 kg, clamping desks 2 to 5 cm thick.
Where does the TYP 113 look its best? (our styling advice)
Clamped to a solid wood desk or drafting table, with the arm swung low over the page.
