The Design Story

In 2001 Achille Castiglioni, one of the great names of Italian design, sat down with his friend the architect Gianfranco Cavaglià to rethink something as ordinary as a pencil. They settled on a section of three arches, one for each finger that holds it, and had wooden prototypes made in the workshop of Pier Luigi Ghianda. The shape was too complex for the production methods of the day and stayed in the Castiglioni archive for twenty years, until the Fondazione Achille Castiglioni and Cavaglià trusted the drawings to EGOUNDESIGN, a young studio in Bologna that solved it with 3D printing. The collection is called CENTO3; TRILObyME is its pocket atelier.

What does TRILObyME replace in my bag?

A whole pencil case: graphite, ballpoint, two wax crayons, two highlighters, an eraser and a sharpener live in one 10.5 cm object.

Why three lobes?

Castiglioni and Cavaglià designed the section around the three fingers that hold a pencil, and the shape also stops it from rolling away.

How is each TRILObyME made?

It is 3D-printed one piece at a time in Italy from biodegradable PLA; the layering leaves a soft, lightly ribbed surface.

What are the four TRILObyME color families?

Classici (Graphene, Red, British Green), Rock (Blue, Pink), Magi (Gold, Incense, Myrrh) and Soft (Yellow, Natural Ivory, Quiet Blue).
