Toyama Hamono T527 Stainless Detail Snips — all-stainless and forged by hand, so the edge stays bright in damp greenhouses and humid summers.
Hand-finished in Sanjo, Japan.
The Design Story
Sanjo, in Niigata, has worked metal for centuries, and Toyama Hamono has forged shears there since 1861. The workshop still uses tanzo, traditional forging, and finishes every pair by hand: the meeting of the blades, the smoothness of the pivot, the balance in your palm. Their stated aim is simple: tools made to stay, not to be replaced. Japan’s Good Design Award and a Sustainable Garden Product of the Show title at Melbourne’s 2023 flower and garden show followed.
Why You’ll Love It
The edge is knife-sharp, so stems are sliced, not crushed. The asymmetrical handle, Toyama Hamono’s own design, is shaped for comfort and makes it easier to apply force. Being stainless, it shrugs off damp. And because a craftsman sets each pair by hand, the action feels smooth and balanced from the first cut.
Made for Real Life
Use it on live plants only; very dry wood, bamboo, frozen branches, wire and plastic are off limits. Wipe it clean after use and keep it indoors. The R3 eraser and R2 slim whetstone keep it like new. Also see the Toyama Hamono T27-C Camel Leather Snips.

Questions We Hear Most

It is made for pruning and thinning bonsai, flowers and indoor plants. The narrow tips reach into dense growth for precise thinning.

Toyama Hamono forges each blade and then adjusts every pair by hand: how the blades meet, how smooth the pivot is, how it balances. You feel it in the first cut.
How does the T527 detail snips feel in the hand?
The asymmetrical handle, Toyama Hamono’s own design, is shaped for comfort and makes it easier to apply force. It weighs about 170 g.
Does the T527 detail snips need special care?
Less than carbon steel: stainless resists rust in damp air. Still wipe it clean after use and store it indoors.
Is the T527 detail snips a good gift for a gardener?
It is a tool made to be kept, from a family workshop working since 1861. Add the R5N leather holster to complete it.
