San Francisco designer Peter Stathis is fascinated by how everyday objects shape the way we live. His award-winning designs are held by MoMA, Cooper Hewitt and the Denver Art Museum, and he has been a Pablo collaborator since the original Tube Top in 2006. Co-designer Matthew Boyko brought years of hands-on model making to the project.

The Design Story

Pablo Pardo founded Pablo Designs in San Francisco in 1993 around one idea: reduce a lamp to what it really needs. Superlight takes that idea to its limit. Peter Stathis, who founded the industrial design studio Virtual Studio in 1989, and San Francisco designer Matthew Boyko drew the task light as a gestural line in space, a precise yet playful structure that seems to defy gravity. The loops and pivots give it its signature silhouette, and the colored felt pads add a note of personality to a serious tool.

The integrated LED is rated for 50,000 hours, so there are no bulbs to hunt for. The 9-foot cord reaches an outlet behind most desks, and the 120–240V rating means it can travel abroad with only a plug adapter. It ships flat-packed and goes together at home. What makes Superlight different from a classic architect lamp?

It does the same job with a fraction of the visual weight. Instead of springs and a heavy arm, Superlight is one slim aluminum line with pivots that turn on three axes, so it moves freely in every direction and still holds its position.

Is Superlight comfortable to work under for hours?

That was the brief. The LED array is designed so it casts one clean shadow rather than the stripy multiple shadows of cheaper LED strips, the 3000K light is warm, and you can dim it all the way down to match the rest of the room.

Black or White: which Superlight should I choose?

Black reads as a crisp graphic line, beautiful against a white wall or a pale wood desk. White almost disappears in a light room, leaving just the glow and the colored pad. Both come with the same four felt pads.

What are the colored felt pads for?

They sit on the steel base and let you change Superlight’s accent color: Mustard, Chestnut, Turquoise or Charcoal, all included. They also make a soft resting spot for your phone, keys or glasses.

Does Superlight come in other versions?

Yes. Choose the Superlight Floor for a reading corner or the Superlight Wall to keep the desk completely clear.
