The Design Story

Boris Berlin is one of the most accomplished designers working in Copenhagen; his work has won many design awards and is exhibited in the Design Museum Denmark, Die Neue Sammlung in Munich, MoMA in New York and the V&A in London. For Flying, the knit is stretched between a wavy aluminum frame and a center piece that keeps top and bottom apart, which gives each lamp its soft, organic silhouette.

Hung over a table or in a stairwell, it reads as a slow wave in the air rather than a lampshade. The built-in LED shines through the knitted underside, so the light is soft and calm. The shade is knitted straight from yarn into its final form, so nothing is wasted, and the lamp ships flat-packed. The four colors run from airy Ivory White to warm Light Terracotta.

Plan on a licensed electrician: the fixture connects to a ceiling junction box and is finished with its canopy. Our tip for the knit: switch it off and dust it now and then with a soft, dry cloth.
