The Design Story
In the high, cool mountains of Japan, wild grape climbs the trees until it chokes them, and foresters have to cut it back. For centuries the vine was woven into baskets, sandals and rope. Yama-Biko keeps that tradition going as a form of upcycling: it takes vine that would otherwise be discarded and weaves it, strip by strip, into bags that are meant to last a lifetime.

Koji looks less woven than grown. Bands of vine overlap and cross at unexpected angles, so the surface has depth, shadow and movement, like bark or a bird’s nest. It is the bag people ask about, and it is roomy enough to be your everyday companion.
