Wonder Pendant Light by Penta

Wonder is a pendant built around a glowing rod of borosilicate glass, designed in 2015 for Penta by Bartoli Design.

It comes in 3 sizes (Mini, Medium and Large), with a metal structure in matt gold, matt black, matt bronze or glossy chrome and a transparent or smoked glass diffuser, in 3000K or 2700K light.

The Design Story

Penta says a group of Wonder lamps in different sizes, finishes and heights carries the luminous beauty of the borosilicate glass in every single rod, whether transparent or smoked. One Wonder works on its own, and several together make a composition. Penta has used the lamp in hospitality projects, including the Le K2 Palace hotel.

The Story

Penta works in borosilicate glass, the same family of glass used for laboratory ware. It is resistant to thermal shock, expands only about one third as much as ordinary soda-lime glass, withstands temperatures of about 500°C (932°F) and stands up well to chemicals. Each piece is shaped by hand with burners, which is why no two shades are exactly alike.

The Designer

Bartoli Design is the studio of Paolo and Anna Bartoli, who carry on the design work Carlo Bartoli began in 1960. The studio’s approach rests on simplicity and balance, from the first concept through product development and communication, and it also takes on architecture, exhibition, interior and urban design. It has worked with makers such as Arflex, Kartell, Kristalia and Segis. The R606Uno chair for Segis won the XXI Compasso d’Oro ADI in 2008, and the Gaia armchair for Arflex belongs to the permanent design collection of MoMA in New York.

How It Was Made

Penta designs and builds its lamps by hand in Brianza, Italy, and backs them with a 2-year manufacturer guarantee from the Auralis Group. Wonder’s structure is metal, finished matt in gold, black or bronze or glossy in chrome, and the diffuser is borosilicate glass in transparent or smoked. The light source is an integrated 4W LED.

Wonder turns a simple glass rod into the light source. The transparent glass gives a bright, clear glow, and the smoked glass a softer, moodier one. What sizes does Wonder come in?

Mini is 6.3 in wide and 17.3 in high, Medium is 8.3 in by 22.4 in, and Large is 10.2 in by 25.6 in. The cable is about 165 to 169 in long, so the drop is easy to adjust.

Should I choose 3000K or 2700K for Wonder?

Both are warm white. 3000K gives 370 lumens with transparent glass (230 with smoked) and a slightly clearer light, while 2700K gives 333 lumens (207 with smoked) and a softer, more golden glow. Pick 2700K for bedrooms and dining spaces, or 3000K for kitchens and work areas.

What is the difference between transparent and smoked glass?

Transparent glass lets more light through, so it is brighter. Smoked glass tints the light and softens the look of the rod, with less output.

Can Wonder be dimmed?

Dimming comes from the canopy. Penta lists type B canopies for on-off, 0-10V, DALI and phase-cut control, and installation sheets for the on-off and 0-10V 110V versions are linked on this page.
