Trace Linear Chandelier by CTO Lighting

Trace Linear is a horizontal chandelier of crossing curved bronze strands tipped with liquid cast glass shades, made by CTO Lighting of London. It comes with 2, 3, 5 or 7 strands, from 55.1 in to 126 in long, made for a dining table, a kitchen island or a reception desk.

It comes in 2 finishes: Antique Bronze and Bronze, each with liquid cast glass, and 2 canopy options: a ceiling plate or a ceiling rose.

The Design Story

Trace celebrates connection and scalability. CTO drew on the natural world and the work of sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, and each component is joined with care, which gives the whole piece an airy, delicate look. Curved metal strands carry shades of veiled glass that give a soft, diffused glow.

The Story of CTO Lighting

Chris and Clare Turner founded CTO Lighting in London in 1998 on one principle: design lights of uncompromising quality, using only the finest materials and working with elite British craftsmen. Chris is an engineer who designs and builds with meticulous detail, and Clare brings the eye of fashion. Together they built a name for understated luxury in hand-finished brass, mouth-blown glass and artisan-cut stone, and the collection has gone on to light The Savoy, The Dorchester, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse.

How It Was Made

CTO assembles every light to order. Curved strands in antique bronze or bronze carry shades of liquid cast glass, which CTO also calls veiled glass. The glass comes from Italian glass workshops, where liquid opal is combined with the pulegoso technique: molten glass is poured into a steel mould, shaped by hand and annealed slowly, which gives it a semi-translucent, misty surface.

The Finishes

Antique Bronze. Rich, deep tones with a natural patina. Each fixture shows the character of the material and the hand of the British artisans who finish it.

Bronze. Deep, rich color and a robust build bring a touch of historical weight to a modern room, with a warm, inviting glow.

Liquid Cast Glass. Called veiled glass by CTO. Molten glass is poured at over 800 C into a steel mould, hand-shaped with softened edges and annealed slowly for 24 hours, giving a semi-translucent, mist-like surface.

Made for Real Life

The 110-130V versions have integrated LEDs at 2700K, from 16.8W in the Linear 2 to 58.8W in the Linear 7. CTO lists trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimming for the 110-130V Linear 3, 5 and 7, and lists no dimming option for the 110-130V Linear 2. Weights run from 24.3 lb to 70.5 lb, so the ceiling fixing must carry the weight. Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and avoid abrasives.

CTO lists Trace Linear 2 at 55.1 in long, 13.8 in wide and 17.7 in high (1400 x 350 x 450 mm), the 3 at 67.7 in long, the 5 at 94.5 in long and the 7 at 126 in long (3200 mm). The suspension cables are supplied cut to the drop you need.

Questions We Hear Most

Is Trace Linear dimmable?

CTO lists trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimming for the 110-130V Linear 3, 5 and 7. The 110-130V data sheet for the Linear 2 lists no dimming option, so ask us before you plan a dimmer for that size. DALI and 0-10V are listed only for 220-240V.

What do Linear 2, 3, 5 and 7 mean?

The number is how many strands the chandelier has, according to CTO. More strands make it longer and heavier: the 2 is 55.1 in (1400 mm) long and the 7 is 126 in (3200 mm) long.

How far does it hang?

The suspension cables are supplied cut to the drop you need. The minimum overall drop with the plate is 23.9 in (608 mm) for the 2, 25.1 in (638 mm) for the 3, 35.7 in (908 mm) for the 5 and 41.7 in (1058 mm) for the 7. With the rose, add about 1.3 to 1.7 in (32 to 42 mm).

What is the difference between the ceiling plate and the ceiling rose?

They are the two canopy options for the same light. The plate is flat, 0.3 in (8 mm) deep, and the LED driver sits in the ceiling cavity, up to 65.6 ft (20 m) from the light. The rose is 1.6 in (40 mm) deep for the 2 and 3, and 2 in (50 mm) deep for the 5 and 7, and holds the driver itself. The canopy gets longer with the size, from a 7.7 in (195 mm) square for the 2 to a 66.9 in (1700 mm) bar for the 7. The light itself is the same.

How heavy is it?

The Linear 2 weighs 24.3 lb (11 kg), the 3 weighs 33.1 lb (15 kg), the 5 weighs 50.7 lb (23 kg) and the 7 weighs 70.5 lb (32 kg), with either canopy. Plan for a ceiling fixing that can carry it.

How do I clean it?

Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If a mark remains, use a slightly damp lint-free cloth, then dry it with a soft dry one. CTO advises against detergents and abrasive cleaners on metal and glass.
