Sun is a tall, full-bodied sphere of laser-cut recycled cardboard, layered by hand around a glass diffuser so it glows like its name. The Design Story

Graypants began in Seattle with two architects, Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and an unlikely material. Grizzle built a series of chairs from found cardboard, then turned the scraps into lights, and the lights stole the show. Sun is the most sculptural result of that idea: a humble material shaped into a form you would not guess was cardboard.

How It Is Made

Each layer of recycled cardboard is cut with precision, then assembled by hand with non-toxic adhesive around a black steel frame. The stacked edges catch the light in fine, shifting lines, which is why a Sun looks different by day and by night, and why no two are exactly alike. Grizzle calls the process a "high-tech, low-tech scenario": computers for the design, human hands for the assembly.

The 32 in holds four E26 sockets and the 48 in holds six, each for LED bulbs of up to 15W (bulbs not included), with 2700K warm white recommended. It runs on 120V and is rated IP20 for dry locations. It hangs on a black or white 6.5 ft cord, with a 16 ft (488 cm) cord available, and Graypants also offers custom cords and canopies. Please have a qualified electrician plan the ceiling support, especially for the 48 in, which weighs 26.2 lb. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air; the shade is non-toxic and handmade.

Which size should I choose?

The 32 in (82 cm wide, 75 cm high) suits a dining table or a tall entry. The 48 in (about 50 in wide and 43 in high) is a grand statement for double-height spaces, lobbies and large restaurants.

What is the difference between Natural, White and Blonde?

Natural shows the warm brown of raw cardboard, White is clean and bright, and Blonde is a soft, pale tone. The shapes and sizes are the same.

What bulbs does it use?
