Stones Outdoor Lamp by Oluce

Stones are glowing white lamps shaped like natural stones, made in white polyethylene for the garden, the terrace or a room indoors, designed by Marta Laudani and Marco Romanelli for Oluce.

It comes in 2 sizes, Small (207) and Medium (208), both in white.

The Design Story

Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, took the soft shapes of natural stones and turned them into lamps. Each Stone is a single smooth body of white polyethylene that glows from the inside, giving direct and diffused light. They can stand alone or sit together in the greenery of a garden or on a summer terrace, and the different sizes let you build a small group of stones with different heights and glows.

The Story

Oluce describes the Stones outdoor lamps as direct descendants of the Stone of Glass collection by the same designers, with shapes inspired by nature. The range was designed in 2002. Oluce makes the Stones in three sizes; this page offers the Small 207 and the Medium 208.

The Designers

Marta Laudani and Marco Romanelli are architects who have worked together since 1988, with offices in Rome and Milan. Their work covers product design, interiors and exhibitions, including the restoration of the Museum of Roman Civilization in Rome and the exhibition “Gio Ponti: a World”. They took part in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2004. For Oluce they also designed the Fiore series, Lanterna and Lanternina, and Cand-led.

How It Was Made

Each Stone is made of white nylon and polyethylene, with a lamp inside the body. Oluce describes the lamp as suitable for outside and inside use, with direct and diffused light. Oluce makes the lamp in Italy.

Why You’ll Love It

Stones bring a soft glow to the places where a normal lamp would be awkward: the edge of a pool, a bed of plants, a step or a corner of the terrace. They look like objects in the daytime and like small moons at night, and a group of two or three feels like a landscape.

Made for Real Life

The Small 207 takes one E26 bulb up to 12W and the Medium 208 takes one E26 bulb up to 25W. Oluce lists the lamp type as fluorescent, so check the technical sheet before you choose a bulb. The maker page gives no IP rating. Wipe the polyethylene with a soft damp cloth.
