Shard is a pendant of flat planes that open like petals, made by CTO Lighting of London. It is 25.6 in across, with a brass base and a shade of honed alabaster or bronze kiln glass, and it throws a soft, diffused light upward.

The Shard collection sits where brutalist character meets modernist elegance. Its forms are broken into flat planes and put back together as a blossoming, petal-like shape that sends the light upward, softly diffused. The angular form recalls brutalist design, and the natural materials soften it for the room.

The Story of CTO Lighting

Chris and Clare Turner founded CTO Lighting in London in 1998 on one principle: design lights of uncompromising quality, using only the finest materials and working with elite British craftsmen. Chris is an engineer who designs and builds with meticulous detail, and Clare brings the eye of fashion. Together they built a name for understated luxury in hand-finished brass, mouth-blown glass and artisan-cut stone, and the collection has gone on to light The Savoy, The Dorchester, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse.

How It Was Made

CTO assembles every light to order in England. The base is pure brass, finished in antique bronze or polished nickel, and it holds the petal-like panels of honed alabaster or bronze kiln glass. An integrated LED lights the panels.

The Finishes

Antique Bronze. Rich, deep tones with a natural patina. Each fixture shows the character of the material and the hand of the British artisans who finish it.

Polished Nickel. A bright, mirror-like silvery finish that reflects the light and colors around it. Each piece is made by skilled British artisans.

Honed Alabaster. Every piece is cut from natural stone, prized for its soft, diffused light. The veining occurs naturally, so no two are alike, from almost white to grey-veined.

Bronze Kiln Glass. Kiln-formed glass in a warm, artisan-tinted bronze tone that softens and warms the light it carries.

Made for Real Life

The 110-130V version has an integrated 22.5W LED at 2700K, dimmable with a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer. At 33.1 lb it is heavy, so the ceiling fixing must carry the weight. Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and use a slightly damp cloth for marks. Skip detergents and abrasives on the alabaster, the glass and the metal.

Questions We Hear Most

Is Shard dimmable?

Yes. CTO lists trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimming for the 110-130V version. A DALI option is listed only for 220-240V.

What is the difference between the alabaster and the kiln glass?

Honed alabaster is natural stone cut thin, so it glows white to cream and its veining varies from piece to piece. The bronze kiln glass is kiln-formed and tinted, and its bronze tint gives a slightly warmer look. The pendant is otherwise the same.

How big is Shard?

It is 25.6 in (650 mm) wide, 25.6 in (650 mm) deep and 16.7 in (425 mm) high.

How far does it hang?

It comes with one 39.4 in (1000 mm) rod that you adjust on site. The minimum overall drop is 21.7 in (550 mm), and CTO can supply up to 121.8 in (3094 mm) on request.

How heavy is it?

Shard weighs 33.1 lb (15 kg). Plan for a ceiling fixing that can carry it.

Is every alabaster piece the same?

No. Alabaster is natural stone, so the veining and tone vary from piece to piece.

How do I clean it?

Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and use a slightly damp lint-free cloth for marks. CTO advises against detergents and abrasive cleaners on the alabaster, the glass and the metal.
