Roest is a slim steel tube that hangs like a drawn line, and its colour comes from a slow chemical conversation between iron, oxygen, water and time. Designed by VanJoost for Graypants and hand-made in Holland, the vertical pendant gives you a small, quiet piece of industrial character for a dining table, a kitchen island, a bedside or a stair landing.

The Design Story

The Roest collection was designed by VanJoost around one idea: let a natural process do the decorating. Graypants describes the series as unpretentious simplicity, built on the reaction between iron, oxygen, water and time, and shows its natural colours in unusual settings. Even the name fits: roest is the Dutch word for rust.

Graypants itself was founded in Seattle by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker and works from studios in Seattle and Amsterdam. Roest is one of the Dutch-made lines in that family, and a custom Roest installation was part of the studio's 2021 TOMO project in the Seattle area.

How It Is Made

Each tube is steel that is allowed to oxidize naturally. Once the finish has developed, the piece is treated to stop further rusting, so the surface will not come off on your hands or stain what is nearby. The canopy is black powder-coated steel, and the fixture hangs from a black cord.

Because the colour comes from a natural reaction rather than a paint line, tone and texture vary from one tube to the next. That variation is the point: a cluster of Roest pendants always looks collected rather than catalogued.

Made for Real Life

The standard black cord is 6.5 ft (2 m), which gives plenty of room to set the height your ceiling and sight lines need. A longer 16 ft (5 m) cord and custom canopies are available on request. Roest takes one GU10 lamp (not included), up to 10W LED, and a 2700K warm white lamp is recommended. Dimming depends on the lamp you choose. It is UL certified and rated for dry locations only.

Which finish should I choose: Rust, Rust/Zinc, Zinc or Carbon?

Rust is the oxidized iron look the collection is named for. Zinc, Carbon and Rust/Zinc are the alternatives, and Rust/Zinc combines the Rust and Zinc finishes. Each is a natural finish, so you can mix them in one cluster for a layered effect.

How do I choose between 15V, 30V and 45V?

They share the same 2.375 in (6 cm) diameter and differ in height: 6 in, 11.75 in and 17.75 in. Short tubes suit tight spots such as bedsides and counters, while the 45V stretches into a more dramatic line over a table. Many people group two or three heights together.

What bulb does Roest take, and is it included?

No lamp is included. The fixture has one GU10 socket and takes an LED lamp up to 10W; 2700K warm white is recommended. Whether it dims depends on the lamp you install.

Will it rust further or stain my ceiling or table?

After the steel oxidizes naturally, Graypants treats each piece to stop further rusting, and the finish will not come off or stain. Keep it dry and indoors.

Roest is rated for dry locations only, so it belongs in indoor spaces such as dining rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and entries.

What should I know before installing it?

Graypants advises having a licensed electrician handle the ceiling wiring, switching the power off and testing it with a voltmeter, and checking for hidden wires before drilling. Keep the fixture out of direct sunlight and leave at least 12 in (31 cm) between the lamp and the canopy.
