Designed by VanJoost for Graypants and hand-made in Holland, it comes in Rust, Zinc or Carbon.

The Design Story

Roest is the Dutch word for rust, and the collection is built around it. VanJoost approached the series as a study of iron, oxygen, water and time, and Graypants shows it in unusual settings so the natural colour becomes the decoration. The sconce is the quietest member of the family: no shade, no ornament, just the tube.

Graypants was founded in Seattle by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker and works from studios in Seattle and Amsterdam. Its list of installed work includes TOMO, a 2021 commercial project near Seattle that features Roest alongside custom pieces.

How It Is Made

The sconce is made from steel that is oxidized naturally and then treated so the finish stops changing and does not rub off or stain. Graypants makes the Roest collection by hand in Holland, and the Netherlands is the country of origin listed on the spec sheet.

Because the colour is a natural process and not a coating, each sconce develops its own pattern of tone. Two Rust sconces side by side will be close relatives rather than identical twins.

Why You'll Love It

At 2.375 in (6 cm) wide, this is one of the slimmest sconces you can put on a wall. It suits narrow spaces such as hallways, stair walls and either side of a mirror, and it reads as an object even when it is switched off.

Mount a pair to frame a bed or doorway, or stack three in different finishes on one wall for a deliberate sample-card effect. The steel stands up well next to brick, plaster, concrete and dark paint.

Made for Real Life

The sconce has two GU10 sockets, each taking a lamp up to 10W LED, and 2700K warm white is recommended. Lamps are not included, and dimming depends on the lamps you choose. It runs on 120V, is UL certified and is rated for dry locations only.

Questions We Hear Most

How do I choose between Rust, Zinc and Carbon?

All three are the same slim steel tube with a different natural finish, each treated to stop further rusting. Rust is the oxidized iron look the collection is named for, while Zinc and Carbon are the alternatives for walls where you want a different tone.

What bulbs does the sconce use?

It has two GU10 sockets, and each takes an LED lamp up to 10W. Lamps are not included. Graypants recommends 2700K warm white, and dimming depends on the lamps you pick.

How high should I hang it on the wall?

Because the sconce is 11.75 in (29.8 cm) tall, a centre height of about 60 to 66 in (150 to 170 cm) from the floor suits most hallways, and a bedside pair usually sits a little lower. Test the height with tape before your electrician drills.

Is the finish going to come off on my wall or hands?

No. After the steel oxidizes naturally, Graypants treats each piece to stop further rusting, and the finish will not rub off or stain.

Graypants advises having a licensed electrician wire it, turning off the power and checking with a voltmeter, and using a cable locator before drilling. Keep the fixture out of direct sunlight and install it where there is plenty of open space around it.
