A Roest cluster hangs three or five slim iron tubes from a single canopy, each one colored by a slow reaction between iron, oxygen, water and time. Designed by VanJoost for Graypants and hand-made in Holland, the group reads like a drawn line of rust, zinc or carbon, and it is sold complete as one fixture.

The Design Story

Roest takes its name from the Dutch word for rust. Graypants describes the collection as unpretentious simplicity, built on the reaction between iron, oxygen, water and time, and it shows natural colors in places where you would not expect to find them. VanJoost designed the series, and it is hand-made in Holland.

A tube is slim enough to disappear into a room, but a cluster of tubes at different lengths turns the same idea into a rhythm. Graypants was founded in Seattle by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and a custom Roest installation was part of the studio's 2021 TOMO project in the Seattle area.

How It Is Made

Each tube is iron that is left to oxidize naturally. Once the finish has developed, the piece is treated to stop further rusting, so the surface will not come off on your hands or stain what sits below it. The canopy of the cluster is aluminum with a smooth black powder coat, and the cord is black.

Because the color comes from a natural reaction and not a paint line, tone and texture vary from tube to tube. In a cluster that variation is the point: the group always looks collected, never catalogued.

Why You'll Love It

Roest has almost no visual weight. Every tube is just 2.375 in (6 cm) in diameter, so five of them over a table still leave the view open. The three heights, 15V, 30V and 45V, give the groups their shape: a staggered round cluster for a dining table, five matching 30V tubes in a clean row, or a mixed linear set that climbs and falls along a long counter.

Finish changes the mood. Rust brings the warm oxidized look the collection is named for, Zinc and Carbon are cooler and darker, and Rust/Zinc sits between the two.

Made for Real Life

The round canopy is aluminum, 2 in (5.1 cm) deep and offered in 15, 24 and 32 in (38, 61 and 81 cm) diameters. The three-tube cluster is shown on 24 in as standard. Graypants lists five-tube clusters on a 32 in canopy, and some may fit on 24 in, so we confirm the canopy size for your arrangement when you order. The standard drop is 5 ft (152 cm) from the ceiling to the bottom of the lowest tube. The linear canopy is 43.25 x 5.25 x 2 in (109.9 x 13.3 x 5.1 cm) with a standard drop of 3 ft (91 cm). A custom drop is available at extra cost and lead time. The canopy and cord are black as standard; a white canopy and cord are available on request, which may add lead time. Mount it on the ceiling with the couplers provided, or hang it on the aircraft cable provided; ceiling anchors are not included. Each tube is wired as on the single Roest: one GU10 socket for an LED lamp of up to 10W (lamps not included), with 2700K recommended, on 120V. Dry locations only.

Which Roest cluster should I choose?

The round three-tube cluster suits a small round table or an entry, and the round five-tube cluster suits a larger table or a stairwell. The linear canopy carries five tubes in a row, either all 30V or a mixed set of heights, and suits a long table, island or counter.

What are the differences between Rust, Rust/Zinc, Zinc and Carbon?

Rust is the oxidized iron look the collection is named for. Zinc and Carbon are cooler, darker alternatives, and Rust/Zinc combines the Rust and Zinc finishes. All four are natural finishes with some variation from tube to tube.

What do the 15V, 30V and 45V tubes measure?

All are 2.375 in (6 cm) in diameter. The 15V is 6 in (15.2 cm) tall, the 30V is 11.75 in (29.8 cm) tall and the 45V is 17.75 in (45.1 cm) tall.

What lamps does a Roest cluster take?
