Relic is a wall light with a brass base and a tall, asymmetric shade of honed alabaster or kiln-formed glass, made by CTO Lighting of London. It is 10.6 in wide and 14.2 in high, and comes in a left and a right version.

It comes in 2 metal finishes, Antique Bronze and Polished Nickel, each with honed alabaster or bronze kiln glass.

The Design Story

Relic is inspired by the idea of a precious fragment from the past. Its forms are reduced to clean lines and paired with an asymmetric shade, for a glowing wall feature in a hall, reception room or any space that wants understated luxury.

The Story of CTO Lighting

Chris and Clare Turner founded CTO Lighting in London in 1998 on one principle: design lights of uncompromising quality, using only the finest materials and working with elite British craftsmen. Chris is an engineer who designs and builds with meticulous detail, and Clare brings the eye of fashion. Together they built a name for understated luxury in hand-finished brass, mouth-blown glass and artisan-cut stone, and the collection has gone on to light The Savoy, The Dorchester, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse.

How It Was Made

CTO assembles every light to order in England. The base is solid brass, finished in antique bronze or polished nickel, with chamfered angles that refract the light and project from the wall like a small sculpture. A solid brass wedge sits against the softer, fragment-shaped shade of honed alabaster or kiln-formed glass, and a crystallised diffuser in the base is made by what CTO calls a unique artisan process.

The Finishes

Antique Bronze. Rich, deep tones with a natural patina. Each fixture shows the character of the material and the hand of the British artisans who finish it.

Polished Nickel. A bright, mirror-like silvery finish that reflects the light and colors around it. Each piece is made by skilled British artisans.

Honed Alabaster. Every piece is cut from natural stone, prized for its soft, diffused light. The veining occurs naturally, so no two are alike, from almost white to grey-veined.

Bronze Kiln Glass. Kiln-formed glass in a warm, artisan-tinted bronze tone that softens and warms the light it carries.

Relic is a small, warm light with a lot of character. The tall shade spreads soft light up the wall, and a left and right pair set either side of a fireplace or a bed reads as symmetrical.

Made for Real Life

The 110-130V version has an integrated 9W LED at 2700K, dimmable with a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer. It weighs 11 lb. Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and use a slightly damp cloth for marks. Skip detergents and abrasives on the alabaster, the glass and the metal.

Questions We Hear Most

Is Relic dimmable?

Yes. CTO lists trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimming as standard for the 110-130V version. A DALI option is listed only for 220-240V.

What do Left and Right mean?

Relic's shade is asymmetric. In the left version the shade leans one way and in the right version it leans the other, so you can hang a mirrored pair. Both versions are the same size and weight.

How big is Relic?

It is 10.6 in (270 mm) wide, 5.9 in (150 mm) deep and 14.2 in (360 mm) high.

How do I mount it?

It mounts on a 3.7 x 3.5 in (95 x 90 mm) wall plate, and CTO's data sheet includes a North American junction box cover diagram. Ask your electrician to confirm the box and the wall for the 11 lb weight.

Is every alabaster piece the same?

No. Alabaster is natural stone, so the veining and tone vary from piece to piece.

How do I clean it?

Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and use a slightly damp lint-free cloth for marks. CTO advises against detergents and abrasive cleaners on the alabaster, the glass and the metal.
