The Design Story
CTO drew Petra from the organic quality of glass. A soft, meteoric core of opal or hand-shaped smoked glass sits inside a second layer of thick, pebble-like glass in a tinted neutral pigment. The two layers diffuse and deflect the light, so the glow looks different from every angle. The pendant combines the delicacy and the strength of the natural world.
The Story of CTO Lighting
Chris and Clare Turner founded CTO Lighting in London in 1998 on one principle: design lights of uncompromising quality, using only the finest materials and working with elite British craftsmen. Chris is an engineer who designs and builds with meticulous detail, and Clare brings the eye of fashion. Together they built a name for understated luxury in hand-finished brass, mouth-blown glass and artisan-cut stone, and the collection has gone on to light The Savoy, The Dorchester, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse.
How It Was Made
CTO's artisans shape the glass by hand, and the metalwork is finished in satin brass or bronze. CTO assembles each Petra to order in England.
The Finishes
Satin Brass. Warm golden tones and a brushed, satin surface give a soft sheen that feels luxurious but understated. CTO selects the metal for its durability and beauty.
Bronze. Deep, rich color and a robust build bring a touch of historical weight to a modern room, with a warm, inviting glow.
Matt Opal inner shade. A soft white core that gives an even, warm glow through the smoked outer glass.
Smoked inner shade. A hand-shaped smoked glass core that gives a deeper, amber glow and shows the filament-style light inside.

Petra works as a single statement light or in multiples. CTO suggests hanging several to make a delicate display over a kitchen island or a dining table. The rod hangs it close and firm, and the two glass layers keep the light soft.
Made for Real Life
The 110-130V version takes one E12 bulb, 60W maximum or a 6.5W LED at 2700K, and needs a dimmable bulb with a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer to dim. It weighs 26.5 lb, and CTO asks you to check that the ceiling can carry it. It is IP20 for dry indoor rooms and hangs from a 39.4 in drop rod you can shorten on site. Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Skip detergents and abrasives.

What is the difference between the opal and smoked inner shades?
The matt opal inner shade gives a soft white core and an even glow. The smoked inner shade is hand-shaped smoked glass with a deeper, amber glow.
