Pebble is the organic, irregular family in Scraplights: four hand-built forms called Denny, Alki, Allyn and Madison, each a smooth, weathered shape, none of them a perfect circle. This cluster hangs combinations of them from one canopy, either a long linear bar or a round plate.

Graypants calls Pebbles the latest addition to Scraplights, with forms taken from pebbles gathered at three beaches near Seattle. The shapes are credited to the Graypants design studio in Seattle, part of an architecture and product practice founded by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker that works from Seattle and Amsterdam.

Grizzle has spoken about how the cardboard itself was the challenge: some people think of it as a cheaper material, so the work was to turn it into something elegant. Pebble is one of the clearest answers, a rounded, almost stone-like form that you only recognize as layered cardboard when you look closely.

How It Is Made

Each pebble is a stack of laser-cut layers of recycled corrugated cardboard, numbered so they assemble in order, glued by hand with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. The laser leaves a dark edge on every layer, so the shapes read as fine contour lines, like a topographic map of a stone.

The pendants are then wired to a single powder-coated aluminum canopy, which makes the group easy to hang from one ceiling point.

Round clusters hang from a round canopy offered in 15, 24 and 32 in (38, 61 and 81 cm) diameters, with a standard 5 ft (152 cm) drop. The three-pendant round cluster is shown on 24 in as standard. Graypants lists five-pendant clusters on a 32 in canopy, and some may fit on 24 in, so we confirm the canopy size for your arrangement when you order. Custom drops are available at extra cost and lead time. Each pendant is wired as on its single-pendant version: one E26 socket, up to 15W LED, 2700K warm white recommended, 120V (bulbs not included). Please have a qualified electrician plan the ceiling support.

Pebbles are large, organic shapes, so these clusters need room and ceiling height, and they are not for a low ceiling or a narrow hall. They are made to order, so they are not for projects that need light within days, and they are for dry, indoor rooms only.

They are the four Pebble shapes. Alki is 13 in wide and 8 in tall, Allyn is 14 in by 13 in, Denny is 14 in wide and 25 in tall, and Madison is 22 in wide and 14 in tall.

Which arrangement suits a long table?

The linear bars suit long tables and islands: three Madison for a bold row of the widest shape, or five pendants (two Allyn, two Alki and one Madison) for a longer, more varied line.

Which arrangement suits the middle of a room?

The round clusters hang from a round canopy and look good from every side. Choose Denny, Alki and Allyn for three pendants, or Madison, Denny, Alki and two Allyn for five.

How do the finishes differ?

Natural shows brown cardboard with dark laser-cut edges and comes with a black canopy and cord. White and Blonde come with a white canopy and cord; White is clean and pale, and Blonde is a warm white with a burned edge.
