Oliv 48 Linear Pendant: Recycled Cardboard by Graypants

Oliv 48 Linear is the slimmest and lightest of Graypants' 48-inch cardboard linears: 45.5 in (115.6 cm) long, 7.25 in (18.4 cm) wide and 7.5 in (19.1 cm) tall, at just 4 lb (1.8 kg). Its narrow, softly rounded body lets it hang over a slim table, a desk, a bar counter or a hallway without crowding the room.

Pick Natural or Blonde for a gently singed laser edge, or White for clean, pale edges. Every Oliv is made by hand and made to order.

The Design Story

The Linear Series is credited to designer Xiu Xiu on the Graypants site. It carries the studio's Scraplights idea, building light out of corrugated cardboard, into a form that feels warm and calm: a strong downlight beneath and a gentle glow around the edges. Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, the Seattle architects who founded Graypants, now lead a studio split between Seattle and Amsterdam, and Oliv 48 Linear is designed in Seattle, Washington. Grizzle has said he left architecture because "I missed making things," and that hands-on instinct is still the thread running through every Scraplight.

Graypants lists Scraplights among the projects it has lit, including Baanmeesters in Harderwijk in the Netherlands. This is the studio's everyday-scale lighting, brought to your room.

How It Is Made

Layers of corrugated cardboard are cut to shape, by laser for Natural and Blonde and by knife for White. The laser leaves a faint scorched rim, while the knife keeps the white edges crisp. Hands then assemble the layers using non-toxic adhesive, and a non-toxic, low-VOC fire retardant is applied. A powder-coated canopy completes the ceiling connection.

Is Oliv 48 a good choice for a narrow table?

Yes. At 7.25 in wide it is the slimmest of the three 48-inch linears, so it suits narrow tables, desks and counters where a broader fixture would overwhelm.

How do the three finishes differ?

Natural is the classic corrugated tone with a laser-scorched edge. Blonde is lighter, with the same edge. White is cut with a knife, so its edges are clean and pale.

What size is the light source, and is it bright enough?

The integrated LED is 26W and puts out 2200 lumens with a CRI of 90, in a 2700K warm white. That is comfortable for dining and work, and it dims on a 0-10V control.

Does it include a plug or a switch?

No. It is a hardwired ceiling fixture. It connects to your 110-277V supply through the canopy, and your electrician can pair it with a 0-10V dimmer.

How long does it take to arrive?

Oliv 48 Linear is made to order in about 4 weeks, whichever finish you choose.

Any tips for hanging it?

Plan on an electrician, a ceiling anchor (not included) and a check for hidden wires before drilling. The mounting bracket holds the driver, and the fixture is leveled before the final tightening. Leave at least 12 in (31 cm) between the lamp and the canopy.

How should I look after it?

Dust it with a dry duster or blow it clean with compressed air, and keep it out of direct sunlight and damp rooms.
