Ohio Cardboard Pendant Light by Graypants

Ohio is a rounded pendant of laser-cut recycled cardboard, layered by hand around a glass diffuser so the light comes through soft, warm and even. It comes in two sizes, 24 and 32 in, and three finishes, Natural, White and Blonde, and it works as a single feature over a table or as a trio down a reception desk or restaurant bar.

The Design Story

"People paid more attention to the lights than the furniture, and so we decided to do something with that."

Graypants began in Seattle with two architects, Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and an unlikely material. Grizzle built a series of chairs from found cardboard, then turned the scraps into lights, and the lights became the business. Ohio is part of the Scraplights family that grew from that moment, still designed in Seattle and still made by hand.

How It Is Made

Each layer of recycled cardboard is cut with precision, then assembled by hand with non-toxic adhesive around a gray powder-coated steel frame. The stacked edges catch the light in fine, shifting lines, which is why an Ohio looks different by day and by night, and why no two are exactly alike.

Made for Real Life

Each Ohio holds three E26 sockets for LED bulbs of up to 15W (bulbs not included), with 2700K warm white recommended. It runs on 120V and is rated IP20 for dry locations. It hangs on a black or white 6.5 ft cord, with a 16 ft (488 cm) cord available, and Graypants also offers custom cords and canopies. Please have a qualified electrician plan the ceiling support. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air; the shade is non-toxic and handmade.

Which size should I choose?

The 24 in (61 cm) suits a dining table, entry or small room, and the 32 in (82 cm) is a bolder choice for a kitchen island, reception or larger space.

What is the difference between Natural, White and Blonde?

Natural shows the warm brown of raw cardboard, White is clean and bright, and Blonde is a soft, pale tone. The shapes and sizes are the same.

What bulbs does it use?

Three E26 sockets, each taking an LED bulb of up to 15W. Bulbs are not included, and 2700K warm white is recommended.

How long will it take to arrive?
