Nimbus is a chandelier of handmade fritted glass discs gathered like a cloud on a slim metal frame, made by CTO Lighting of London. It comes in three sizes: medium, large and a cascade that drops over 6 ft.

The Design Story

Nimbus is built from handmade fritted glass discs, each one unique, that overlap like petals around a central stem. The piece is sculptural when it is off, and when it is on the discs soften the light into a warm, even glow. CTO designed it as a centerpiece for a room, in sizes from a dining table to a stairwell.

The Story of CTO Lighting

Chris and Clare Turner founded CTO Lighting in London in 1998 on one principle: design lights of uncompromising quality, using only the finest materials and working with elite British craftsmen. Chris is an engineer who designs and builds with meticulous detail, and Clare brings the eye of fashion. Together they built a name for understated luxury in hand-finished brass, mouth-blown glass and artisan-cut stone, and the collection has gone on to light The Savoy, The Dorchester, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and Chiltern Firehouse.

How It Was Made

CTO's artisans hand-form and finish every glass disc, so no two Nimbus chandeliers are identical. CTO assembles each light to order in England, with the metalwork finished in bronze or satin brass.

The Finishes

Bronze. Deep, rich color and a robust build bring a touch of historical weight to a modern room, with a warm, inviting glow.

Satin Brass. Warm golden tones and a brushed, satin surface give a soft sheen that feels luxurious but understated. CTO selects the metal for its durability and beauty.

Fritted Glass. CTO developed its signature fritted glass with its artisan partners. Each disc is hand-formed, so the texture and the fall of light vary from piece to piece.

Nimbus is the light you hang when a room needs a focal point: over a dining table, in a double-height living room, or down a stairwell with the cascade. The glass looks like carved snow when it is off and like warm paper when it is on.

Made for Real Life

The 110-130V version takes E12 bulbs in the medium (25W maximum, or 4.5W LED) and E26 bulbs in the large and cascade (60W maximum, or 8W LED), plus two GU10 bulbs in the cascade. All need dimmable bulbs and a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer to dim. These are heavy lights, from 92.6 lb to 220.5 lb, so CTO asks you to confirm the ceiling can carry them, and a professional should install them. IP20 for dry indoor rooms. Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Skip detergents and abrasives.

Questions We Hear Most

Is the Nimbus chandelier dimmable?

Yes, with dimmable bulbs. CTO lists a trailing-edge (phase-cut) dimmer for the 110-130V version.

What is the difference between medium, large and cascade?

The medium is 46.9 in (1190 mm) wide and 25.6 in high. The large is 62.6 in (1590 mm) wide and 34.3 in high. The cascade is 46.9 in wide like the medium but 78.7 in (2000 mm) tall, for stairwells and tall rooms.

What bulbs does it take?

The medium takes four E12 bulbs (25W max, or 4.5W LED). The large takes eight E26 bulbs (60W max, or 8W LED). The cascade takes fourteen E26 bulbs and two GU10 bulbs. All are rated for 2700K LED.

How heavy is it?

The medium weighs 92.6 lb (42 kg), the large 121.3 lb (55 kg) and the cascade 220.5 lb (100 kg). CTO notes that the ceiling structure must be able to carry it.

Are the glass discs all the same?

No. CTO's artisans form each disc by hand, so the texture varies from piece to piece.

How do I clean it?

Dust with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If a mark remains, use a slightly damp lint-free cloth, then dry it with a soft dry one. CTO advises against detergents and abrasive cleaners.
