Moon is the full, round globe of the Scraplights family, and this cluster puts three or five of them on one canopy: a straight row of identical Moons on a linear bar, or a round canopy of Moons in graduated sizes that reads like a phase chart hanging from the ceiling.

The Design Story

"People paid more attention to the lights than the furniture, and so we decided to do something with that."

Scraplights began with chairs. Graypants cofounders Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker showed seats made from salvaged cardboard at a sustainable design competition, and lights improvised from the scraps drew more attention than the furniture. The lights became the flagship line, and Graypants names Moon, along with Disc, as one of its best-sellers.

The studio works from Seattle and Amsterdam. Scraplights have been installed in projects including NBBJ Columbus and the Ancestry offices in Salt Lake City, both listed on the Graypants projects page, and Graypants photographs Moon clusters above a bar and inside its own studio space.

How It Is Made

Each Moon is a stack of laser-cut layers of recycled corrugated cardboard, numbered by the laser so they go together in order. The layers are glued by hand with a non-toxic adhesive, treated with a non-toxic fire retardant and finished with the dark cut edge that outlines each ring of corrugation when the bulb is on.

The shades are wired to a single powder-coated aluminum canopy, either a straight linear bar or a round plate, so the group hangs from one ceiling point.

Linear clusters hang from a 43.25 in (109.9 cm) bar with a standard 3 ft (91 cm) drop. Round clusters hang from a round canopy offered in 15, 24 and 32 in (38, 61 and 81 cm) diameters, with a standard 5 ft (152 cm) drop. The three-pendant round cluster is shown on 24 in as standard. Graypants lists five-pendant clusters on a 32 in canopy, and some may fit on 24 in, so we confirm the canopy size for your arrangement when you order. Custom drops are available at extra cost and lead time. Each pendant is wired as on its single-pendant version: one E26 socket, up to 15W LED, 2700K warm white recommended, 120V (bulbs not included). Please have a qualified electrician plan the ceiling support.

Questions We Hear Most

Should I choose a linear or a round Moon cluster?

Linear clusters, with three Moons on a 43.25 in bar, suit a rectangular dining table, kitchen island or bar. Round clusters suit a square table, an entry or the center of a room, where the graduated sizes can be admired from all sides.

What is the difference between the two linear options?

Both are three Moons on the same bar. One uses three Moon 14 (14 in wide), and the other uses three Moon 10 (10 in wide) for a lighter, closer row.

What sizes are in the round clusters?

The three-pendant round cluster is Moon 10, Moon 14 and Moon 18. The five-pendant round cluster is two Moon 10, two Moon 14 and one Moon 18.

What are Natural, White and Blonde like?

Natural shows brown cardboard with dark laser-cut edges and comes with a black canopy and cord. White is bright and clean, and Blonde is a warm white with a burned edge; both come with a white canopy and cord.

How low does it hang, and how is it mounted?

It surface mounts with the provided ceiling couplers. The standard drop from the ceiling to the bottom of the lowest pendant is 3 ft (91 cm) for linear clusters and 5 ft (152 cm) for round clusters, and a custom drop is available at extra cost and lead time.

What bulbs does it use, and how long does it take?

Each Moon takes one E26 LED bulb of up to 15W, with 2700K recommended, and bulbs are not included. Clusters are made to order in about 6 weeks and ship from the United States.

Can I put it in a bathroom or outdoors?

No. It is for dry, indoor rooms only and should be kept out of direct sunlight.

Why We Love It
