Madison is the broad pebble in the Graypants Scraplights Pebbles family: a wide, gently domed pendant of laser-cut recycled corrugated cardboard, 23.6 inches across and 13 inches tall. It is the largest Pebbles shade and the one built to hang above a table.

The Design Story

Graypants drew the Pebbles shapes from stones gathered at three beaches near Seattle. Madison is the widest of them, and at 23.6 inches across it is the most generous shade of the group.

The studio was founded by Seattle architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker and works from Seattle and Amsterdam. Madison is designed in Seattle and made in the United States, and the Graypants project page lists Scraplights at Pablo Y Pablo in Wallingford, Seattle.

How It Is Made

Madison is cut from recycled corrugated cardboard by laser, one numbered layer at a time. Because of its width, each layer is a large ring; makers glue them by hand with non-toxic adhesive, then add a non-toxic fire retardant and wrap the shade in recycled paper.

At 23.6 inches across it is still only 2.4 lb, a lightness that comes from the corrugated cardboard itself.

At 23.6 in wide and 13 in tall, Madison suits a four to six person dining table or a section of island. It hangs on a 6.5 ft (198 cm) black or white cord with a 4.5 in canopy. A 16 ft (488 cm) cord is available, and Graypants also offers custom cords and canopies.

One E26 socket takes an LED bulb up to 15W, with 2700K warm white recommended; the bulb is not included. Rated IP20, dry locations only. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air; the shade is non-toxic and handmade.

One shape and one construction, three looks: Natural reads as cardboard, and White and Blonde read lighter. Natural and White take about 2 weeks and Blonde about 3.

Can I dim Madison?
