The Design Story

Swirl comes from Graypants Studio, the design team of a company founded in Seattle by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, with studios in Seattle and Amsterdam. Architects think about voids and sightlines, and Swirl makes good use of both.

It sits inside Loci, the studio's modular lighting system named for the mathematical term for a set of points forming a shape. The system has lit a Seattle penthouse, the Lucille venue, a hotel lobby in Budapest and the Skyview Observatory bar on the 73rd floor of Columbia Center, where a custom single-channel Loci installation runs along the bar.

Swirl calls for a dry indoor space with real height, such as a stair hall, atrium or double-height entry. Because of its length, involve your electrician and installer before ordering so access, support and wiring are planned. The built-in LEDs mean no bulb changes at height, and a dry duster or compressed air handles cleaning.

Swirl is made for tall rooms and dry indoor locations. It is not the right fit for low ceilings, for outdoor or damp areas, or for projects that cannot wait six to eight weeks. A tall fixture also deserves careful planning for ceiling support, so please involve your installer early.
