Lens is a wall lamp with a curved, stamped-metal screen that throws light both up and down, designed in 2013 by Francesco Rota for Oluce.
It comes in 2 finishes: anodic bronze and satin gold glaze.
The Design Story
Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, builds Lens around a single concave screen of curved, stamped metal mounted flat to the wall. The screen’s shallow curve splits the light from its bulb into an upward wash and a downward pool, giving one fixture two distinct kinds of light. Francesco Rota kept the body simple so the metal’s curve and finish do the work.
The Designers
Francesco Rota was born in Milan in 1966 and trained as an interior and product designer, graduating from the Art Center College of Design in La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland, in 1994. He returned to Milan in 1995 and founded the Francesco Rota Design Office, working with Italian and international companies on interior and spatial design, including the offices, showroom and warehouse for Oluce’s own factory and headquarters in Milan.
“…with the curved surfaces to create an interesting interplay of light and mirrors.”
Oluce, on Lens
How It Was Made
Lens is made in Italy from curved, stamped sheet metal formed into a single concave screen, mounted flat against the wall on a compact backplate.

Why You’ll Love It
Lens gives you two kinds of light from one simple metal screen: a soft upward wash that lifts the ceiling, and a focused downward pool for reading or accent lighting. The curved form catches the light along its edge whether it’s on or off, and both finishes read warm against most wall colors.
Made for Real Life
Lens uses a single R7s.15 halogen bulb, up to 120W, which is not included and is not dimmable. Wipe the stamped metal screen with a soft dry cloth and skip abrasive or solvent cleaners.
