The Kerflights S2 is a wall sconce that lights the wall as much as the room. A plywood shade cut with a kerf pattern sits on a powder-coated steel frame, and the glow that leaks through the slots paints fine lines of light across the surface behind it.

It measures 12 in wide, 13 in tall and 6 in deep, and comes in Black Walnut, Blackened Ash, Light Ash and White Oak. Designed by Graypants Studio, each sconce is made to order.

The Design Story

Kerfing is the trick of cutting a pattern of slots into a rigid material so it can flex. Applied to plywood, it lets Graypants shape a curved shade that still reads as wood, with a texture that feels natural and a precision that is plainly engineered.

The cuts do double duty. They let the shade bend, and they let light pass through in thin lines, so a Kerflights lamp throws a pattern onto nearby walls and tables. On a sconce, that pattern lands right where you want it, on the wall itself.

Graypants began in Seattle, founded by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and today works from studios in Seattle and Amsterdam.

How It Is Made

The S2 shade is FSC-certified plywood and the frame is powder-coated steel. Graypants calls the Kerflights shades handmade and non-toxic, produced with responsible practices, and the sconce is designed in Seattle and made in the United States.

Like every lamp in the family, the shade panel can be swapped and reversed, so the fixture is built to change with you.

Where to Hang It

Use S2 sconces in pairs beside a bed, along a hallway, either side of a mirror, or up a stairwell. In an entry, a single sconce makes a glowing wall detail without taking floor or table space. The warm wood sits easily against painted plaster, brick and tile.

Light and Rating

S2 uses one E26 bulb, up to 15W LED (not included), and 2700K warm white is recommended. Brightness and dimming depend on the bulb and dimmer you choose. The sconce is rated for dry locations only.

What kind of light pattern does it make?
