Kerflights P2 Wood Pendant Light by Graypants

The Kerflights P2 is the small one: a slim plywood lantern, 7 in across and 13 in tall, with a kerf pattern that lets light escape in fine lines. It is the easiest way to bring Graypants Studio craft to a counter, a nightstand, a stair landing or a long row of tables.

The Design Story

Wood does not normally bend this far. Cut a pattern of narrow slots into plywood, a technique called kerfing, and it curves smoothly instead of cracking. Graypants uses that idea to make a shade that feels natural to the touch and is shaped with technological precision.

Behind the shade is a powder-coated steel wire frame, and the shade panels can be swapped and reversed, a feature of the whole Kerflights collection. The result is a small fixture with a lot of detail, designed by Graypants Studio in Seattle.

Graypants began in Seattle, founded by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and today works from studios in Seattle and Amsterdam. P2 shows the studio approach at its most compact.

Materials and Making

The P2 shade is FSC-certified plywood and the canopy is powder-coated steel. Graypants describes the shades as handmade, non-toxic and produced with responsible practices, and the pendant is made in the United States.

At 1.5 lb (0.68 kg) it is light enough to hang from a standard ceiling box without fuss, and the slim shape keeps sight lines open.

Where It Works

Hang P2 pendants in a staggered group over a kitchen island or bar, as a pair on either side of a bed, singly above a bedside table or reading chair, or in a tight row along a counter or hallway. The warm wood tones blend with oak floors, plaster walls and black metal alike.

Light and Cord

P2 takes one standard E26 bulb, up to 15W LED, and 2700K warm white is the recommended color. The bulb is not included, and brightness and dimming depend on the bulb you choose. The cord is black or white, 6.5 ft as standard with a 16 ft length available, so you can set the drop to suit your ceiling. P2 is rated for dry locations only.

Questions We Hear Most

How big is the Kerflights P2?

The shade is 7 in (17.8 cm) in diameter and 13 in (33 cm) high, and it weighs 1.5 lb (0.68 kg). The canopy is 4.5 in (11.4 cm) across.

Which bulb should I use?

One E26 bulb, LED up to 15W. Graypants recommends 2700K warm white. Bulbs are not included, and dimming and brightness depend on the bulb and dimmer you choose.

How many P2 pendants do I need over a kitchen island?

That depends on the island, but a common approach is to hang them in a row or a staggered group with a few inches of air between shades. Tell us your island length and we will happily suggest a count.

What is the difference between the finishes?

Light Ash and White Oak are pale and natural. Blackened Ash and Black Walnut are dark and rich. All four show the fine kerf slots, and real wood grain varies a little between pieces.

Can I choose the cord length and color?

The standard cord is 6.5 ft, and 16 ft is available, in black or white. Message us before you order if you need the longer cord or a white cord and canopy, and we will confirm the details.

How long will my P2 take to arrive?

Kerflights P2 pendants are made to order, with a lead time of about 4 weeks.

Any installation tips?

Graypants advises having a licensed electrician handle any ceiling wiring, switching the power off and confirming with a voltmeter that the wire is dead, and checking for hidden cables before you drill. Leave at least 12 in (31 cm) between the lamp and the canopy.
