Kerflights Felt Drum Pendant by Graypants, D6 and D9

The Kerflights Felt Drum takes the Kerflights frame and swaps wood for color. A soft PET felt shade wraps a powder-coated steel frame in a 22 in D6 or a 33 in D9, and you choose from 46 felt colors, from quiet Charcoal, Gray, Light Gray and Beige to Admiral, Hot Pink, Kiwi and Wisteria.

Three lamp sockets sit above an acrylic diffuser for an even glow. Every drum is made to order, so your color and size are made for you.

The Design Story

Kerflights is the Graypants collection built on steel wire frames and shade panels that can be swapped and reversed, designed to adapt to many settings. The wood versions play with the strength and flexibility of plywood; the felt versions bring the same silhouette in a softer, more colorful material.

Graypants Studio designed the family in Seattle, and the studio is known for making light from unexpected materials. Graypants began in Seattle, founded by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and today works from studios in Seattle and Amsterdam.

Materials and Making

The shade is PET felt over a powder-coated steel frame, with an acrylic diffuser. Graypants describes Kerflights shades as handmade, non-toxic and produced with responsible practices, and the lamps are made in the United States.

Felt gives the drum a matte, tactile look that no paint or veneer matches. It reads as a fabric from across the room and as a sculptural object up close.

Choosing a Color

The range runs from neutrals to saturated brights. Neutrals such as Charcoal, Gray, Light Gray, Beige, Ivory, Fog, Cashmere and Latte settle into almost any scheme. Deep tones such as Indigo, Plum, Wine, Oxford and Ebony add drama. Greens such as Sage, Olive, Palm, Mint, Kiwi and Aloe, and warm shades such as Coral, Cinnamon, Mustard and Dandelion, give a room a clear point of view. Our photos show the core colors; every other color in the range is made the same way.

Made for Real Life

Choose the D6 at 22 in across for a table seating four to six, an entry or a bedroom. Choose the D9 at 33 in across for a large table, a living room, a stair hall or a commercial space. Both are 13 in tall. Each drum takes three standard E26 bulbs, up to 15W LED each (not included), 2700K warm white recommended, and is rated for dry locations only. The cord is black or white, 6.5 ft standard, with 16 ft available.

How many colors does the Kerflights Felt Drum come in?

There are 46 felt colors, from neutrals like Charcoal, Gray, Light Gray and Beige to saturated shades like Admiral, Hot Pink, Kiwi and Wisteria. The same colors are available in both the D6 and the D9.

What is the difference between the D6 and the D9?

The D6 is 22 in (55.9 cm) across and weighs 8.8 lb (4.0 kg). The D9 is 33 in (83.8 cm) across and weighs 14.8 lb (6.7 kg). Both are 13 in (33 cm) tall and take three E26 bulbs.

Which bulbs does it take?

Three E26 LED bulbs, up to 15W each, not included. Graypants recommends 2700K warm white, and dimming and brightness depend on the bulbs and dimmer you choose.

Will my felt color match the photos?

Screens vary, and felt is a matte, textured material, so color can look different in person. Message us with your wall color or room and we will help you pick.

What is the shade made of, and how do I clean it?

Kerflights Felt Drums are made to order, with a lead time of about 4 weeks.

What should I know before installing it?

Graypants advises having a licensed electrician handle any ceiling wiring, switching the power off and confirming with a voltmeter that the wire is dead, and checking for hidden cables before you drill. Keep the fixture out of direct sunlight, and leave at least 12 in (31 cm) between the lamp and the canopy.
