Hive and Nest are the only Scraplights built with angled layers, and this cluster hangs them together from a single round canopy: three plump Hives, two tall Nests with a bigger Nest, or a mix of five that rises and falls like a flock of seeds. One canopy, one ceiling point, a whole sculptural ceiling.

Graypants names Hive and Nest as the newer designs in its Scraplights Classic Series, and as the only Scraplights with angled layers. A custom inner ring lets the cord and bulb hang straight while the layers lean, so a group of them can tilt and still glow evenly. Graypants shows the pair together in a white cluster, which is the idea this page turns into one ready-to-hang fixture.

The studio was founded by Seattle architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker and works from Seattle and Amsterdam. Scraplights hang in restaurants such as Plum Bistro and Pablo y Pablo in Seattle, among other projects listed on the Graypants projects page.

How It Is Made

Every shade is cut from post-consumer recycled corrugated cardboard by laser, numbered so the layers stack in order, then glued by hand with a non-toxic adhesive and treated with a non-toxic fire retardant. Hive and Nest are stacked at an angle, which gives each shade its leaning, teardrop outline and makes every one slightly different.

The pendants are then wired to one powder-coated aluminum canopy, so the whole group mounts at a single ceiling point.

A cluster solves the problem a single pendant cannot: it fills the height of a room. The Hive and Nest mix gives you round and tall shapes at different levels, which suits a stair void, an entry, a dining table or the corner of a lounge. Natural keeps the brown of the cardboard, White is soft and bright, and Blonde is a warm white with a burned edge.

The round canopy is offered in 15, 24 and 32 in (38, 61 and 81 cm) diameters. The three-pendant arrangements are shown on 24 in as standard. Graypants lists five-pendant clusters on a 32 in canopy, and some may fit on 24 in, so we confirm the canopy size for your arrangement when you order. The standard drop is 5 ft (152 cm) from the ceiling to the bottom of the lowest pendant, and a custom drop is possible. Each pendant is wired as on its single-pendant version: one E26 socket, up to 15W LED, 2700K warm white recommended, 120V (bulbs not included). Please have a qualified electrician plan the ceiling support.

Not the Right Fit If

This cluster is made to order, so it is not for a project that needs light within days. It is for dry, indoor rooms only, and it needs ceiling height: the standard 5 ft drop is meant for rooms with generous ceilings, and a custom drop can be arranged for taller spaces.

Which arrangement should I choose?

Choose Hive 9 + 12 + 15 for three compact, round shades of different sizes. Choose 2 x Nest 24 + Nest 32 for a vertical group that suits stairwells and tall entries. Choose the five-pendant mix of two Nest 24 plus Hive 9, 12 and 15 for the fullest ceiling feature.

How big is each pendant in the cluster?

Hive 9 is 9 in wide and 11 in tall, Hive 12 is 12 in by 14 in, and Hive 15 is 15 in by 18 in. Nest 24 is 9 in wide and 24 in tall, and Nest 32 is 13 in wide and 33 in tall as printed on the Graypants spec sheet.

What are the Natural, White and Blonde finishes like?

Natural shows the warm brown cardboard with dark laser-cut edges and uses a black canopy and cord. White is clean and bright, and Blonde is a soft warm white with a burned edge; both use a white canopy and cord.

How is the cluster mounted and how low does it hang?

It mounts to the ceiling with the provided couplers on a round canopy. The standard drop from the ceiling to the bottom of the lowest pendant is 5 ft (152 cm), and a custom drop is available at extra cost and lead time.

What bulbs does it take, and does it dim?

Each pendant has one E26 socket for an LED bulb of up to 15W, with 2700K warm white recommended. Bulbs are not included. Dimming depends on the bulb, so pair dimmable LED bulbs with a compatible dimmer.

How long will a cluster take to arrive?

Every cluster is made to order, with a lead time of about 6 weeks. It ships from the United States.

Can I use it over a bathtub or on a covered patio?

No. It is rated for dry, indoor locations only, and cardboard should stay away from damp areas.
