Gemma is a pendant that looks like light caught inside a gemstone. Each lamp is a faceted body of solid crystal hung from a slim chrome canopy, and you choose how many to gather: a single drop, or a cluster of up to 36 for a stairwell or a lobby.

The designer and the story

Gemma comes from Filipe Lisboa, who began his career in Portugal, moved into lighting and founded Viso in 1999. Viso designs, engineers and fabricates its fixtures with architects and designers, and Gemma belongs to the studio's Origins line. It has been specified in hospitality rooms including the Thompson Hotel, Mohegan Sun and Host on Howard.

Questions, answered

How do I choose a cluster size?

Start with the footprint. The cluster widths run from about 5 inches for a single light to about 38 inches for 36 lights. One light suits a bedside or a bar run, 3 to 9 lights suit a dining table or entry, and 14 to 36 lights suit stair wells, double-height rooms and lobbies.

Which glass color should I choose?

Clear reads brightest and most sparkling, Amber gives a warm honey glow even when the lamp is off, and Smoke is the moodiest and pairs well with dark walls and brass.

Can Gemma be dimmed?

Yes. Viso rates it to dim from 100 percent down to 15 percent on ELV dimmers. Match the dimmer to the lamp type you choose, halogen or LED.

Does it take LED bulbs?

Gemma ships with a G4 bi-pin socket for each light. The standard lamp is a 10 watt G4 halogen, and Viso lists a 2 watt G4 LED at 2700K as an option.

Can I get a custom cluster or canopy?

Viso offers custom clusters, drops and canopies for Gemma. Send us the room details and we will pass the brief to Viso. Custom orders follow their own lead time.
