Fresnel is an outdoor floor lamp that carries a glass Fresnel lens on a slim black pole, from the 1966 family designed by Joe Colombo for Oluce.
It comes in 2 heights, small (about 15.6 in) and large (about 35.4 in), both in gloss black.
The Design Story
Oluce, founded in Milan in 1945, took the small Fresnel wall lamp and set its lens on a pole for the garden. The sand-blasted glass lens, 10 cm across, gives direct and diffused light, and the pole stays thin and dark so the light is what you see. Oluce names this floor version as outdoor only, and it fixes into the ground with an inground box.
The Story
Colombo drew Fresnel in 1966 with the idea of an object so essential that it could not be improved, one shaped by time rather than by fashion. Oluce says the lens is the absolute protagonist of the project and that the design was developed over time into wall and ceiling lamps for indoors and outdoors, and into an outdoor-only floor lamp.
The Designers
Joe Colombo was one of the major Italian designers of the postwar years and died in 1971 at the age of 41. Oluce describes his work as an optimistic look toward the future rather than a nostalgic one. He designed integrated living cells such as Visiona ’69 for Bayer and compact self-contained objects such as the Mini-Kitchen of 1963. His other works include the Bobby cart and the Elda armchair (both 1970), a chair for Kartell (1968) and the mp lamp (1972).

How It Was Made
The body is die-cast aluminium lacquered gloss black (RAL 9005), with a moulded, sand-blasted transparent glass lens. The pole is zinc-plated metal painted black polyester. Oluce makes it in Italy.
