Fort Knox, a quiet globe with four temperaments

Fort Knox reduces a pendant to one gesture: a round body, a black cable and a black canopy. What changes is the voice of the material. Copper and Gold glow warm, Silver stays cool and graphic, and Smoke turns the shade into a dark, soft-edged form that all but disappears in a dim room.

Four diameters let the same shape play different parts, from a 6 inch spun-metal accent to a 19.7 inch polycarbonate sphere that can anchor a table or stairwell on its own.

The designer and the story

Viso credits Fort Knox to its in-house team rather than a single named designer. Filipe Lisboa founded Viso in 1999, and the company has since supplied fixtures to hospitality and residential projects, with Fort Knox shown on Viso's project pages for the Beecroft Building, Host on Howard and the Ritz-Carlton Residences.

Repeat one size over a kitchen island, step through mixed diameters down a hallway or stair, or place a single large sphere in the corner of a living room. The 6 inch size suits a bedside or a narrow shelf.

Who this is not for

Fort Knox is not glass or stone, so skip it if you want a crystalline or mineral surface; the larger sizes are polycarbonate. It is also ambient light rather than a reading or task light.

What is Fort Knox made of?

The 11.8, 15.7 and 19.7 inch sizes have polycarbonate bodies, and the 6 inch size is spun metal. The canopy is black and the cable is black.

What does the glow look like?

The lamp you fit sets the brightness; the finish tints the glow. Copper and Gold warm it, Silver keeps it neutral, and Smoke softens and darkens it. A warm white lamp gives the most inviting result.

How do I style a Fort Knox group?
