The Design Story

Graypants began in Seattle with two architects, Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and an unlikely material. Grizzle built a series of chairs from found cardboard, then turned the scraps into lights, and the lights stole the show. Today the studio works from Seattle and Amsterdam, and Drum is one of the simplest, most graceful expressions of that first idea.

"You can tell when something is made by a machine or a human," Grizzle told WeWork Ideas. Drum is made by both: designed and cut with computers, then finished by human hands.

How It Is Made

Each layer of recycled cardboard is cut with precision, then assembled by hand with non-toxic adhesive around a frame. Grizzle calls the process a "high-tech, low-tech scenario." The stacked edges catch the light in fine, shifting lines, which is why a Drum looks different by day and by night, and why no two are exactly alike.

Each Drum holds three E26 sockets for LED bulbs of up to 15W (bulbs not included), with 2700K warm white recommended. It runs on 120V and is rated IP20 for dry locations. It hangs on a black or white cord, 6.5 ft (198 cm) or 16 ft (488 cm), from a black or white canopy, and Graypants also offers custom cords and canopies. Please have a qualified electrician plan the ceiling support. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air; the shade is non-toxic and handmade.

Which size should I choose?

The 18 in (45 cm) works in small spaces or in groups, the 24 in (61 cm) suits a dining table or kitchen island, and the 36 in (92 cm) is a statement piece for larger rooms.

What is the difference between Natural, White and Blonde?

Natural shows the warm brown of raw cardboard, White is clean and bright, and Blonde is a soft, pale tone. The shapes and sizes are the same.

What bulbs does it use?

Three E26 sockets, each taking an LED bulb of up to 15W. Bulbs are not included, and 2700K warm white is recommended.

How long will it take to arrive?

Drum is made to order, with a lead time of about 4 weeks.

Can I use it outdoors or in a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 for dry, indoor locations only.

Can I group several Drums together?
