Drop 48 Linear Pendant: Recycled Cardboard by Graypants

Drop 48 Linear is a long cardboard pendant with a deeper, rounded body: 45.5 in (115.6 cm) from end to end and 10.5 in (26.7 cm) tall, the tallest of the three 48-inch Scraplights linears. That extra depth gives it real presence above a long table, a kitchen island or a reception counter, while the light stays warm and easy on the eyes.

It comes in Natural and Blonde, both with a softly burned laser edge, and in a clean-edged White. Each one is built by hand and made to order.

The Design Story

Graypants credits the Linear Series to designer Xiu Xiu. The idea was to take Scraplights, the studio's flagship cardboard line, in a new direction: warm, down-lit fixtures with rounded, organic shapes that match the softness of the light they give off. Graypants began in Seattle with architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker and now works from studios in Seattle and Amsterdam, and Drop 48 Linear is designed in Seattle, Washington. Grizzle calls cardboard "a material that we respect and honor," and the Drop’s rounded, organic shape shows how much form that humble material can hold.

Scraplights has found its way into restaurants, offices and homes. Among the projects Graypants lists for the line are Plum Bistro on Seattle's Capitol Hill and the NBBJ project in Columbus, Ohio.

How It Is Made

The shade is built from corrugated cardboard that is cut with care: a laser for Natural and Blonde, which leaves a thin, darkened edge, and a knife for White, which keeps every edge pale and crisp. Pieces are joined by hand with a non-toxic adhesive and finished with a non-toxic, low-VOC fire retardant. The ceiling canopy is powder coated.

Drop 48 Linear is made to order, so it is not the choice when you need a fixture installed within days. It is also a deeper fixture than its siblings, so it is less suited to a low ceiling over a walkway. It is for dry, indoor spaces only.

Questions We Hear Most

Why choose Drop 48 over Disc 48 or Oliv 48?

Choose Drop when you want the most depth. It is 10.5 in tall and 7.75 in wide, against Disc at 6.5 in tall and 12.5 in wide, and Oliv at 7.5 in tall and 7.25 in wide.

Which finish should I pick?

Natural has the warmest cardboard tone with a faint burned edge, Blonde is lighter with the same edge, and White is knife-cut for a clean, bright line that suits modern and gallery-style rooms.

Can I change the bulb?

The LED is built in, so there is no bulb to replace. It is rated at 26W and 2200 lumens, with a CRI of 90 and a 2700K warm white tone.

What do I need to dim it?

A 0-10V dimmer. The driver dims down to 1%, but a standard phase-cut wall dimmer will not control it.

When will it ship?

It is made to order, with a lead time of about 4 weeks in Natural, White and Blonde.

How is it installed?

The mounting bracket, which holds the driver, attaches to a ceiling anchor that is not included, and the fixture hangs from the canopy on its cord. Graypants recommends a licensed electrician, power off and tested with a voltmeter, and a check for hidden wires before drilling. The fixture cord carries low voltage only, and 12 in (31 cm) of clearance between lamp and canopy is required.

Can it go in a bathroom or on a covered patio?

No. It is rated for dry locations only and should stay out of direct sunlight.
