The Design Story

Scraplights began when Seattle architect Seth Grizzle used the scraps from a set of cardboard chairs to make lights, and people noticed the lights first. He and Jonathan Junker, the architects who founded Graypants, turned that moment into a collection, and they now work from studios in Seattle and Amsterdam. Dome is one of the shapes that grew from it: a calm, rounded silhouette that lets the cardboard layers do the talking.

Grizzle has said some people see cardboard as a cheaper material, and that the goal was to "turn it into something people couldn't recognize." In Dome, the layered edges glow like carved paper.

How It Is Made

Each layer is designed on the computer and cut with precision from recycled cardboard, then the pieces go back to human hands. Grizzle calls it a "high-tech, low-tech scenario." Dome is assembled by hand with non-toxic adhesive over a black powder-coated steel frame, and a glass diffuser softens the light from three bulbs. Because every piece is hand-assembled, small variations in the layering are part of its character.

Dome holds three E26 sockets with LED bulbs of up to 15W each (bulbs not included); 2700K warm white is recommended. It runs on 120V, weighs 21.2 lb (9.6 kg), and is rated IP20 for dry locations. It hangs on a black or white cord, 6.5 ft (198 cm) or 16 ft (488 cm), and Graypants also offers custom cords and canopies. Please have a qualified electrician plan the ceiling support. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air; the shade is non-toxic and handmade.
