Disc Cardboard Pendant Light by Graypants Scraplights

Disc is the wide, low member of the Scraplights Classic family: a flat, round shade that spreads a soft glow across a table, a bed or a stair landing. Graypants names it one of its best-sellers, and it is easy to see why. It has a simple silhouette, a gentle presence and five sizes, from Disc 16 to a 32 in (81.3 cm) statement.

It is made from recycled corrugated cardboard, cut by laser and assembled by hand, in Natural, White and Blonde. Choose one over a dining table, hang a trio in a hallway, or use the largest size as the focal point of a double-height room.

The Design Story

Disc belongs to Scraplights, the first collection from Graypants, the architecture and product design studio founded in 2007 by Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker. The studio now works from Seattle and Amsterdam and credits Disc to Graypants Studio as a whole.

The collection began when leftover scraps from the studio's own chair-making became lights, and people soon noticed the lights more than the chairs. The result is a family of lights that show how much character an ordinary material can have when it is cut with precision and finished by hand.

How It Is Made

A design is turned into cut files, a laser cuts each cardboard layer and etches a number on it so the stack can be put together in order, and the beam leaves a slightly darkened edge that shows through as a fine line on the finished shade.

The layers are glued together by hand with a non-toxic adhesive, the shade is treated with a non-toxic fire retardant, and each Disc is wrapped in recycled paper for shipping. Because the form is wide and shallow, the layered structure reads as a soft, ribbed pattern when it is lit.

Each Disc comes with a 6.5 ft (2 m) cord and a 4.5 in powder-coated canopy; 16 ft (5 m) and 26 ft (8 m) cords and custom cords and canopies are available on request. Plan the hanging height from the bottom of the shade: Disc 16 is only about 7 in (17.8 cm) tall, while Disc 32 is about 16 in (40.6 cm) tall. It takes one E26 bulb, up to 15W LED, with 2700K warm white recommended, and bulbs are not included. Disc is for dry locations only and should stay out of direct sunlight.

Not the Right Fit If

Disc is wide and low, so it is not the best pick for a narrow stairwell or a spot where you need height rather than spread; Drop is a better match there. The two largest sizes are made to order, so they are not right if you need a fixture within days. It is for dry indoor rooms only.

Which Disc size should I choose?

Disc 16 and 20 suit bedsides, entries and small tables. Disc 24 is a good size over a four-person table. Disc 28 and 32 are statement sizes for large dining tables, open living areas and tall rooms.

What are the dimensions of each Disc?

Disc 16 is 17 in across and 7 in tall. Disc 20 is 20.1 by 9 in, Disc 24 is 24 by 10 in, Disc 28 is 28 by 14 in, and Disc 32 is 32 by 16 in (diameter by height).

What is the difference between the three finishes?

Natural shows the brown cardboard with dark laser-cut edges. White is a bright, clean tone. Blonde is a warm white with a burned edge.

No bulb is included. It takes one E26 bulb, up to 15W LED, and 2700K warm white is recommended. Dimming depends on the bulb, so choose a dimmable LED and an LED-compatible dimmer.

Can I hang several Discs together?

Yes, Graypants photographs Disc in clusters. Each pendant has its own cord and canopy, so you will need a ceiling point for every one. Mixing two or three sizes at different heights gives a layered look.

What should I know before installing it?

Graypants advises having a licensed electrician handle the ceiling wiring, turning the power off and testing it first, and checking for hidden wires before drilling. Keep the fixture out of direct sunlight and leave at least 12 in (31 cm) between the lamp and the canopy. Clean with a dry duster or compressed air.
