Denny is the tall pebble in the Graypants Scraplights Pebbles family: an elongated, smooth form of laser-cut recycled corrugated cardboard, about 13.4 inches wide and 25.6 inches tall. It brings vertical presence to a stair, an entry or a long wall.

The Design Story

Pebbles takes its shapes from stones that Graypants gathered at three beaches near Seattle, and Denny is the long, upright stone of the group. Its height makes it the most dramatic of the four, yet the curves stay soft.

Graypants was started by Seattle architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker and works from studios in Seattle and Amsterdam. Denny is designed in Seattle and made in the United States. Scraplights hang in the Ancestry project in Salt Lake City and in the NBBJ Columbus office, according to the Graypants project list.

How It Is Made

Denny begins as a 3D model and is cut as numbered layers of post-consumer recycled cardboard. After the laser finishes, makers glue each layer to the next by hand with non-toxic adhesive, add a non-toxic fire retardant and wrap the shade in recycled paper.

Because Denny is tall, every layer matters: the stack is built carefully so the long curve stays smooth.

Denny is about 13.4 in wide and 25.6 in tall, so measure from the ceiling to where you want the bottom of the shade to hang. The standard cord is black or white and 6.5 ft (198 cm), and Graypants also lists a 16 ft (488 cm) cord for high ceilings, plus custom cords and canopies.

It takes one E26 LED bulb, up to 15W, in 2700K warm white if you follow Graypants' recommendation. The bulb is not included. Rated IP20, dry locations only. To clean, use a dry duster or compressed air; the shade is non-toxic and handmade.

What ceiling height does Denny need?

Because the shade itself is about 25.6 in tall, Denny works best with ceilings of about 9 ft or more, or where it hangs over a stair or open space. Measure the drop before you order.

Can I get a longer cord for a high ceiling?

The standard cord is 6.5 ft (198 cm). Graypants also lists a 16 ft (488 cm) cord, and custom cords and canopies are available. Message us before ordering and we will check it with you.

What is the difference between the finishes?

The three finishes share one shape: Natural shows the cardboard as it is, while White and Blonde are lighter. Natural and White are made in about 2 weeks, Blonde in about 3.

Is a bulb included?

No. Denny takes one E26 bulb, up to 15W LED, with 2700K recommended. Dimming depends on the bulb.

How do I install Denny safely?

Ask a licensed electrician to wire the ceiling connection. Graypants advises turning off the power, testing with a voltmeter and scanning for cables before drilling. Because Denny is tall, give it clear space around it, away from direct sunlight, with the lamp at least 12 in (31 cm) below the canopy.
