A Chrona Dish cluster gathers spun-brass dishes under one canopy, so a handful of soft, star-like discs hang together as a single glowing composition. Each dish is a shallow brass shell with a diffused acrylic face that spreads an integrated LED into an even halo, and the cluster is sold complete, ready to be hung as one fixture.

Choose a five-dish linear canopy to run along a table or a hall, a three-dish round cluster for a smaller spot, or a five-dish round cluster in all-horizontal, all-vertical or mixed orientation. Every cluster is made to order, about 6 weeks, in Graypants' warm brass finish.

The Design Story

Chrona was designed by Graypants Studio, working from Seattle and Amsterdam, around the idea of light with the quality of the phosphorescent glow that surrounds a star. The dish shape keeps the source out of sight, so what you see is the halo and not the bulb. Graypants shows the series hung singly or gathered as constellations, and the cluster is the version that takes the second idea all the way.

The studio was founded in Seattle by architects Seth Grizzle and Jonathan Junker, and Chrona has already found its way into restaurants and hospitality interiors, among them Plum Bistro on Capitol Hill in Seattle and a reception area at the Sobec Camping resort in Slovenia.

How It Is Made

Each dish starts as a sheet of brass pressed against a rotating form, which spins it into a smooth, seamless curve. A diffused acrylic panel closes the face and turns the integrated LED into an even glow with no visible hot spot. The cluster canopy is aluminum with a smooth black powder coat, and the cord is black.

Brass is a living finish. It warms and deepens with handling and time, and a little polish and wax brings the shine back whenever you like. In a cluster, that slow change happens across every dish together, so the group ages as one piece.

The standard drop is 5 ft (152 cm) from the ceiling to the bottom of the lowest dish. The linear canopy is 43.25 x 5.25 x 2 in (109.9 x 13.3 x 5.1 cm) with a standard drop of 3 ft (91 cm). A custom drop is available at extra cost and lead time. The canopy and cord are black as standard; a white canopy and cord are available on request, which may add lead time. Mount it on the ceiling with the couplers provided, or hang it on the aircraft cable provided; ceiling anchors are not included. Which Chrona Dish cluster should I choose?

The linear canopy suits a long table, a counter or a corridor. The three-dish round cluster fits a smaller table or a landing, and the five-dish round clusters suit larger rooms and entries. Every one is sold complete.

What do the horizontal, vertical and mixed five-dish clusters look like?

All three round five-dish clusters use the same set of dishes: one Dish 17, two Dish 10 and two Dish 6. In the horizontal version they are all horizontal dishes, in the vertical version they are all vertical discs, and in the mixed version vertical and horizontal dishes are combined.

What is the difference between a horizontal and a vertical dish?

A horizontal dish is a shallow brass bowl about 7 to 11 in tall, depending on its size. A vertical dish is a slim disc only 2 to 3 in deep. Both use spun brass, a diffused acrylic face and the same 2700K LED.

Is the light dimmable, and are there bulbs to buy?

The LED is built into each dish, so there are no bulbs to buy. It is 2700K warm white with a CRI of 90. Each dish is wired as on the single-pendant version, which dims with a 0-10V dimmer, so please plan the dimming with your electrician.
